THE HILLCATS: Saturday night, the Hillcats swept both games of a double-header from the Potomac Nationals...Lynchburg took game one 10-5 and game two 7-2 behind four home runs and another complete game for Zeke Spruill...The Hillcats jumped into third place in the Carolina League Northern Division, now 8.5 games back of the first place Wilmington Blue Rocks...
VS. POTOMAC: The Hillcats are 4-3 against the Nationals this season...The two teams will play four games in two days this weekend to make up for Friday night's rainout and a rainout April 9...Last season, the Hillcats were 8-11 vs. Potomac...Myrtle Beach, 2010 Braves Advanced-A Affiliate, did not do as well onlt winning six of their 20 meetings with the Nationals a year ago...
LET'S PLAY TWO: After yesterday's double-header sweep, the Hillcats enter their third double-header of the season today 4-0 in double dips this year...The 'Cats swept their first double-header this season in Frederick on April 23 (3-0, 2-1)...Yesterday was a much more offensive oriented double-header as the Hillcats launched four home runs, and outscored the Nationals 17-7 on the night...
ANOTHER SWEEP BITES THE DUST: The Hillcats failed to sweep the Winston-Salem Dash Wednesday in game three of the series...It was the third chance for Lynchburg to complete a sweep this season, and first attempt at home...The first was a possible four-game sweep in Frederick April 21-24 but the 'Cats fell short 2-1 in the finale...The next opportunity came on the road again, in Wilmington May 2-4, but the Blue Rocks took game three 7-3 over Lynchburg...The loss in the finale brings the Hillcats record to 2-11 in the final game of a series this season...The 'Cats have another chance to sweep today if they can yet again take both games from Potomac...
PUT A CORK IN IT ZANE!: It's a walk-off...The Hillcats won in their final at-bat two nights in a row, Monday and Tuesday...INF Joe Leonard drove in the game winner Monday night in the bottom of the 11th on a sacrifice fly and the 'Cats won 2-1...Wednesday night, Lynchburg ended the game in regulation with a three-run ninth after being down 3-1...OF Keenan Wiley's bases clearing triple ended the game...It was the first win for the Hillcats this season when trailing after eight innings, and it was the Dash's first loss when ahead after eight frames...Lynchburg joined Kinston, Wilmington, and Winston-Salem, as the only teams in the league with wins after being behind heading into the ninth...
BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Eight members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes RHP Arodys Vizcaino (7), SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...Vizcaino was tabbed the 93rd best prospect in all of baseball by BA...
STICKIN' IT TO'EM: INF Kyle Davis started for just the second time for the Hillcats Wednesday night...He began the year with the Winston-Salem Dash, but was released from the White Sox organization and signed by the Braves...In his first appearance against his former club, Davis who had hit .096 (5-for-52) for the Dash, went 2-for-4, with a run scored, a walk, and two stolen bases...He also made a leaping grab at second base to steal a base hit away from Jose Martinez and then tossed the ball to SS Andrelton Simmons at second base to double-off Jared Mitchell and end the inning...In game two last night, Davis hit his first home run in 2011, it was just the third long ball of his career...The other two coming with Great Falls in 2010 while with the White Sox...
LYNCHBURG WANTS YOU: The season is about one-third over, and the Hillcats have already had 39 different players active on the roster in 2011...Three original Hillcats have been promoted to AA-Mississippi...Injuries have been the bigger factor, as 10 players have hit the disabled list after donning a Hillcats uniform this season...The latest to hit the DL was LHP Dimasther Delgado...RHP David Hale has been activated, returning to the Hillcats after spending nearly a month on the shelf (4/27-5/23)...Yesterday the 'Cats welcomed RHP Matthew Frevert, Minor League free agent, and LHP Ryan Buchter, acquired via trade, to the clubhouse and say good-bye again to RHP Eliecer Cardenas who has been recalled to AA-Mississippi, today C Braeden Schlehuber was activated from the DL and C Ryan Delgado was transferred back to Danville, bringing the grand total for the Hillcats' transactions this season to 42 since the beginning of April...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Cameron Selik was selected in the 22nd round of the 2010 draft by the Nationals out of Kansas University...Made five starts for Hagerstown this season before being called up to Potomac on 5/4...In five starts in Hagerstown, was 3-0 with a 0.55 ERA...South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of 4/18-4/24...Currently 0-3 with a 7.63 ERA for Potomac...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Evan Bronson was selected in the 29th round of the 2009 draft by the Nationals out of Trinity College...Named to the 2009 New-York Penn League Mid-season All-Star team...Went 3-0 with a 0.55 ERA in 20 appearances for Vermont in 2009...Pitched two and one-third shutout innings against Lynchburg in relief on 5/22...Currently 1-1 with a 2.42 ERA while making three starts and three relief appearances...
