THE HILLCATS: Friday the Hillcats beat to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 8-1..The âCats led the entire game scoring one in the top of the first inning, while the Birds failed to score until the bottom of the ninth...With the win, the Hillcats jumped into third place in the Carolina League Northern Division, 6.5 games back the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Frederick Keys, tied for first place...
VS. MYRTLE BEACH: The Hillcats are 1-3 against Myrtle Beach this season, as they were swept by the Pelicans at home April 15-17, but the Hillcats took game one of the current series last night...This is the first trip to Myrtle Beach for Lynchburg in 2011, although many players are familiar, as nine active members of the Hillcats squad spent time with the Pelicans in 2010 when they were the Advance-A affiliate of the Braves...
PLEASE BE CAREFUL: Lynchburg seems to be plagued with the injury bug this season, and have made a whopping 28 transactions already this season because of it...Most recently, Saturday night in Winston-Salem, OF Adam Milligan left the game with a tight hamstring and INF Andrelton Simmons left with a sore back...It was found out after the game was over the INF Matt Weaver had broken his thumb diving for a ball at second base...All three players were unavailable for Sunday's series finale, forcing new catcher Jace Whitmer to play as the designated hitter, and warm-up pitcher's in the bullpen, since there were no healthy position players available on the bench...Tuesday, Milligan and Weaver were placed on the disabled list, Simmons didn't play as he was listed as day-to-day, and in case that wasn't enough, INF Joe Leonard was at home sick Tuesday, and was at the ball park but not in the lineup Wednesday night...Simmons and Leonard have returned to action, but Milligan and Weaver were the sixth and seventh Hillcat players to hit the DL after donning the Green & Gold this season (Thomas Berryhill and Angelo Paulino both were listed on the DL to start the season and have not been with the Hillcats yet in 2011)...
LET'S HIT THE ROAD: Away from the "Hill City" this season the Hillcats have hit .268 as opposed to .231 at home, and pitchers have posted a 3.37 ERA, over a run less than at City Stadium (4.57)...Last night the Hillcats had 11 hits, making it the eighth straight road game that the âCats have delivered nine or more base hits as a team...Lynchburg is still just 8-10 on the road but that is better than their 4-10 mark at City Stadium...
BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Eight members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes RHP Arodys Vizcaino (7), SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...Vizcaino was tabbed the 93rd best prospect in all of baseball by BA as well...
REMEMBER ME?: INF/OF Geraldo Rodriguez played part of the 2009 season and all of 2010 with the Pelicans...Through 60 games in 2009, Rodriguez hit .281 with the Pelicans...Last season, he hit.253, with 13 home runs, and 53 RBI through 85 games, earning a promotion in 2011, as he started the year with AA-Mississippi...Hitting just .224 for Mississippi this season, Rodriguez has been sent to Lynchburg to help a Hillcats team plagued by injury...He made his 2011 Carolina League debut Tuesday night against Frederick, after arriving earlier that afternoon and went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored...In three games with the Hillcats, he is 3-for-10 with a home run, two doubles, and three runs driven in...
IT STARTS AT THE TOP: Last night, the first four batters in the Hillcats line-up went a combined 8-for-17 at the plate, as OF Todd Cunningham, INF Andrelton Simmons, INF Phil Gosselin, and INF Joey Terdoslavich all had two hits a piece...The quartet scored six runs and drove in four in the 8-1 route of the Pelicans...On the night the âCats had 11 hits, although three starters went hitless, as INF Joe Leonard added two hits from the six-hole, and OF Keenan Wiley had one hit from the ninth spot in the order...
VIZZY MAKES'EM DIZZY: RHP Arodys Vizcaino was dominant last night as he earned his second win of the season...Perfect through the first two frames, Vizcaino finished the with just two hits allowed and six strikeouts through seven innings of work...Prior to last night Vizcaino had not completed six innings all season, the six strikeouts, matched a season high set on his first start on April 9, and the two hits was a low mark on starts of more than two innings pitched...The win was his firsts since the season opener in Potomac...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER : LHP Robbie Ross was drafted by the Rangers in the second round of the 2008 draft out of Lexington (KY) Christian Academy...Selected as the starting pitcher for the Nort Division in the South Atlantic League mid-season All-Star game in 2010...Finished with the fourth lowest ERA amongst Texas farmhands and was called up to AA-Frisco for the Texas League playoffs...2009 postseason All-Star in the Northwest League...Tabbed as the seventh-best prospect out of the Northwest League...Was chosen as the Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year in 2008...Originally signed a letter of intent with University of Kentucky before signing with the Rangers...Pitched six shutout innings against Lynchburg on 4/17...Currently 4-1 with a 3.31 ERA...
