Calgary Roughnecks News Release

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Roughnecks gave up four short handed goals - three of them during the same early five minute penalty given to Portland's Ryder Bateman for a head butt - on route to a devastating 12-13 loss to Portland.

The Riggers were heavy favourites against a team that had not won since its second game of the season.

But the visitors started slowly - including failing to score during Bateman's lengthy banishment - and were never able to recover from a 1-6 deficit at the end of the first quarter.

Both Tracey Kelusky (3 goals and 5 assists) and Lewis Ratcliff (5 goals and 3 assists) put in tremendous individual performances, but it was not enough to compensate for an error-filled defence and less than stellar goalkeeping.

Andrew Leyshon gave up five goals on the opening nine shots and was soon replaced between the pipes by Ryan Avery. Unfortunately, the rookie fared little better and after he allowed six goals on 17 shots, Leyshon was sent back in.

At the other end of the floor, Dallas Eliuk, the oldest player in the National Lacrosse League, was rock solid and beat back 39 of 51 shots fired on his net.

In a penalty-riddled affair, Portland picked up 42 of the 67 penalty minutes handed out by the officials. But the Riggers were unable to capitalize, going a disappointing 2-12 on the power play.

Calgary's scoring was filled out by Kaleb Toth, Jeff Moleski, Nolan Heavenor and Shawn Cable.

Portland's marksmen were Ryan Powell (4), Mike Holman (3), Tyler Heavenor (3), Scott Stapleford, Bruce Alexander and Richard Morgan.

Due to Calgary's loss, Arizona (8-4) now has a firm grasp on 2nd spot in the NLL's West Division. The Sting went into Denver Friday night and shocked the top-of-the table Colorado Mammoth 14-8.

The Roughnecks drop to 6-6 and are now in 4th spot behind the idle San Jose Stealth (6-5).
