DENVER - A playoff-like atmosphere prevailed at Pepsi Center on Friday night with a packed house on hand to watch the two best teams in the National Lacrosse League's West Division. And as is often the case in playoff games, the winner was decided by superior goaltending and special teams.

The Arizona Sting converted 6-of-8 power-play opportunities and got excellent goaltending from All-Star Rob Blasdell to shut down the Colorado Mammoth during a 14-8 victory in front of a stunned crowd of 18,027.

Arizona was equally adept at killing its own penalties, holding the Mammoth scoreless on five power-play chances. Blasdell, who boasts the NLL's best goals-against average, made 38 saves and allowed just eight goals, the Mammoth's lowest output of the season.

Dan Dawson hurt the Mammoth with a game-high seven assists. He was also one of four Sting players to score twice, while Lindsay Plunkett led the team with three goals.

"We simply got outplayed," Mammoth coach Gary Gait said. "It's disappointing when you don't have a solid effort for 60 minutes."

Mike Law, Jamie Shewchuk and Josh Sims each scored two goals for the Mammoth while Dan Carey recorded a team-high two assists. Starting goaltender Gee Nash was pulled with 8:06 remaining in the first half after allowing six goals on 19 shots. Replacement Chris Levis took the loss with 22 saves on 30 shots.

It was the Mammoth's second consecutive sellout, but the first time the team has lost at home this season. Colorado (10-3) retains the West's best record and Arizona strengthened its hold on second place by improving to 8-4. Both teams play Saturday night, as the Mammoth visits the Minnesota Swarm and the Sting returns to Arizona to host the 6-5 San Jose Stealth.

The Mammoth hosts the Stealth on April 12 in its final home game of the regular season before ending the regular season the next night in San Jose.
