Bangor Lumberjacks News Release
Durham, NC- The Northeast League announced today the lineups for the 2003 All-Star Game to be played on July 29 in Quebec City, home of the Capitales. The Lumberjacks placed five players on the all-star rosters including three pitchers and two position players. Four of the Jacks selected will play for the United States team, while one will play for the World Team, led by Lumberjack Manager Kash Beauchamp.
The first All-Star selected was 1B Donnie Ross, who will start at first for the U.S. team. This season, Ross is hitting .290 with eight home runs, 25 RBI, and 30 runs scored. He leads the team in home runs and RBI. Ross was signed as a free agent this off-season from the Kansas City Royals organization, who signed him as a non-drafted free agent in 1999.
The other position player selected for the team is catcher Brad Hargreaves, who was chosen by U.S. team manager Ed Nottle. Hargreaves is hitting .237 with 11 RBI and 8 stolen bases and has shown spectacular defense behind the plate, throwing out 17 would-be base-stealers, and catching almost every inning of every game for the Jacks this season. The Chicago Cubs selected Brad with their 49th round pick in the 1997 draft. Brad signed with the Lumberjacks in June of 2001.
The first pitcher selected to the U.S. All-Star team is righty Kevin Pincavitch. Pincavitch, who also serves as the Jacks pitching coach, is 5-1 this season with a 2.78 ERA, placing him 8th in the league. Pinky has struck out 47 in 58.1 innings, while walking just 12. Kevin came to the Lumberjacks as pitching coach prior to last season and was activated as a pitcher during spring training this year. He was named an All-Star during the 1999 Northern League East season, which saw Kevin go 10-5 with a 3.33 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 133.2 innings pitched.
Also selected by Nottle to the U.S. team was RHP Jerry Long. Long, a victim of lack of run support, sports a 1-3 record with a paltry 2.41 ERA, good for 5th in the league. Long was signed out of Cleveland State by the Lumberjacks this season and has pitched two complete games for the Jacks.
The Lumberjacks lone World Team representative is RHP Santiago Henry. Henry assumed the closer's role early in the season, which has seen him compile a 3-1 record with a 2.96 ERA and 4 saves in 19 appearances. The San Pedro de Macoris, DR native is a proven hitter over 13 years in the minor leagues, but this is his first season as a pitcher.
The game will be played at La Stade in Quebec City, PQ on July 29. The new format of the Northeast League All-Star game pits the United States' best talent against the World Team, comprised of the best league players from outside of the U.S. Lumberjacks Manager Kash Beauchamp will lead the World Team in this year's game, an honor earned by leading the Lumberjacks to within one strike of the Northern League Championship Series last season.
Bangor returns to Mahaney Diamond this Friday to begin a seven game home stand. The Jacks will play the South Division First Half Champion New Jersey Jackals over the weekend, before entertaining the Elmira Pioneers for four games. Tickets are available by calling the Lumberjacks Ticket Office at (207) 947-1900 or by stopping in the Lumberjacks Pro Shop located in the Bangor Mall.
