July 16, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Allentown Ambassadors fell behind 6-1 early and ended up losing 6-4 to the Elmira Pioneers Wednesday night in Elmira.
Ryan Lehr and Matt Williams each hit solo home runs in the bottom of the second off Ambassador starter Mike Riley to take a 2-0 lead. Riley has now given up eleven home runs this season, which leads the league.
Elmira would add another run in the third, while the Ambassadors would get on the scoreboard in the fourth. Greg Schmidt doubled and then scored on a Marlon Roche groundout.
Elmira would stretch out their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Williams reached on an error on third baseman Ender Gonzalez with one out to get things going. Then back-to-back singles from Ryan Webb and Dennis Abreu scored Williams. Cleatus Davidson grounded out, then Rafael Alvarez singled to score two.
The Ambassadors added one in the fifth on Cedrick Harris' first home run of the season, and another in the sixth.
Then in the eighth, the Ambassadors got a single from Greg Schimdt to begin the inning. After two outs and with Schmidt on second, Ryan Bordenick walked. Then Tito Cruz hit a pop out that first baseman Ryan Lehr dropped, after he was apparently distracted by Cruz running by him to first. Schmidt scored on the play. Then Brian Macchi pinch hit and hit a ground ball down the third base line that Matt Williams bobbled and could not recover in time to get Bordenick at third. With the bases loaded, Harris grounded out to end the inning.
That was as good a chance as the Ambassadors would get, as they went down in order in the ninth. The loss goes to Mike Riley, who is now 1-3. Dan Henderson got the win for Elmira. He is now 4-2. Tim McGee pitched the ninth and got his sixth save. The Ambassadors are now 2-4 in the second half, two games behind first place Elmira who is 4-2. The two teams will play the final games of the four game series tomorrow night.
