Chicago Dogs News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. - For the third time in as many weeks, a Chicago Dog earned an American Association weekly honor.
The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, announced on Monday that Luke Westphal was named this week's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 9, 2019. Westphal's recognition follows the two straight Player of the Week honors earned by Victor Roache and Tony Rosselli.
The Clintonville, Wisconsin native has been nearly unstoppable all season long, but was particularly dominant this past week. In two starts, Westphal went 2-0, allowing just one earned run on six hits and 13 strikeouts over 11 innings. He recorded a 0.82 ERA and limited his opponents to just a .162 batting average.
Westphal's 36 strikeouts this season are the most in the American Association, and his 0.31 ERA is the lowest among qualified starters.
On June 4 against Gary, Westphal allowed just one hit and struck out eight over six shutout innings in the Dogs' 12-3 win. In his next start against Kansas City on June 9, he went five innings and allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out five. That lone run snapped his scoreless streak of 28.1 innings to begin the season.
The Chicago Dogs are back in action tonight at Impact Field against the Texas AirHogs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
