Late Rally Not Enough to Push Dogs Past AirHogs
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Keon Barnum extended his hitting streak to eight games, but the Dogs' late rally fell short as they bowed out to the Texas AirHogs, 5-3, on Monday night at Impact Field.
The Dogs' bats were shut out for seven innings before igniting in the eighth. Jordan Dean singled later scored on a wild pitch to put Chicago on the board. Moments later, Edwin Arroyo reached on an error to score David Olmedo-Barrera to make it 5-2 Texas. In the next at-bat, Trey Vavra belted a triple over the head of AirHogs center fielder Josh Prince to score Arroyo and pull the Dogs within two.
Tony Rosselli led off the ninth with a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Liu Guoqing slammed the door on the Dogs to secure the win.
Trevor Simms (L, 1-3) started solid, but ran into trouble in the fourth inning. An RBI groundout by Luo Jinjun and an RBI triple by Han Xiao made it 3-0 in favor of the visitors. The damage would not end there, as Stephen Haviar lined a single to score Xiao and push The AirHogs' lead to four.
Pedro Echemendia took the reins from Simms in the fourth and allowed one run on three hits while striking out six over 3.2 innings. Ben Allison pitched from there, contributing two shutout innings while recording four strikeouts.
Barnum recorded doubles in the second and seventh innings, but the spark wasn't enough to ignite the Dogs' red-hot offense past AirHogs starter Kevin Hilton (W, 2-2).
The AirHogs struck first in the top of the second with a solo shot by Chen Junpeng, his first of the season.
The Dogs will send Jake Dahlberg (2-0) to the mound on Tuesday for game two against the AirHogs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Impact Field. Gan Quan (0-3) is set to get the start for Texas.
