Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - With the Fresno Grizzlies (81-57) working with only 10 pitchers on the active roster and having used three of their five relievers last night, they looked to starter Luis Cruz to turn in a solid outing. The lefty delivered, working seven shutout innings and striking out a season-high nine Albuquerque Isotopes (60-79) hitters in a 3-0 victory Wednesday night at Chukchansi Park. The combined shutout set a new franchise record for most wins against one opponent in a single season (13-2 vs. Albuquerque in 2015), while the victory also leaves them one win shy of establishing a new franchise record for overall wins in a single season.
Cruz, who hadn't worked more than six innings in an outing since June 23rd, retired 13 in a row from the second to the sixth and struck out eight in that stretch. Travis Ballew took over in the eighth and recorded a scoreless frame, while Jordan Jankowski extended his scoreless outing streak to 11 games on way to collecting his fourth save.
Two doubles along each foul line in the bottom of the third led to two of the three Fresno runs on the night. Tyler Heineman slapped a leadoff double down the left field line and was followed by Nolan Fontana, who plated him with a hard grounder down the right field line. Tony Kemp sacrificed Fontana over to third, while Alex Presley scored him on a ground out to second. An inning later, Jon Singleton doubled and scored on a single by Joe Sclafani to make it 3-0.
The sacrifice by Kemp in the third was one of three on the night, with Fontana and Heineman both laying down bunts to move runners into scoring position.
The shutout win is the fifth since August 3rd and sets them up for a series victory on Thursday night at Chukchansi Park. Right-hander Dan Straily takes the mound for Fresno, while lefty Rudy Owens toes the rubber for Albuquerque. The 7:05 PM game marks the beginning of the 5-4-3-2-1 ticket offer, allowing fans the opportunity to purchase Super View Seats for only $5. CREAM Fresno will be at the park all night serving Ice Cream Tacos and Fresh Baked Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches along the third base concourse.
