Lansing Lugnuts News Release

APPLETON - Yuber Rodriguez drove home four runs and Josh Lex, Aaron Mathews and Ryan Klosterman each connected for homers as the Lugnuts(61-65, 24-33) used a six-run third inning as a springboard to a 12-1 blowout win over Wisconsin(70-57, 31-26) in front of 4,228 fans on Sunday afternoon at Fox Cities Stadium.

After a scoreless first inning, David Hicks led off with a double off Wisconsin starter Aaron Jensen(8-13) and scored on a double by Aaron Mathews and an error by Rattler left fielder Josh Womack. The miscue moved Mathews to third and he scored on a groundout to short by Klosterman.

In the third, Christian Snavely led off with a double. Eric Nielsen then singled to second and an errant throw by Yung Chi Chen allowed Snavely to score. Later, Mathews drove home Nielsen with an RBI double to make it 4-0. Rodriguez came up with a two-out, two-run single to left center that plated David Hicks and Mathews. Lex then followed with his homer, a two-run shot to deep center.

In the fifth, Klosterman and Mathews went back-to-back on homers off Jensen, making it a 10-0 lead. Jensen lasted just four innings plus three batters and allowed 11 hits and 10 runs despite fanning five.

Wisconsin got its lone run in the fifth when Oswaldo Navarro connected for a solo shot off Danny Core(6-9). Still, Core was outstanding. In six innings, he scattered three hits and struck out seven.

Lansing got the game's final runs in the sixth on a two-run double by Rodriguez.

Navarro got three of the Rattlers five hits on the day to pace the minimal Wisconsin offense while Mathews and Rodriguez each collected at least three hits. Every starter except Eugenio Velez collected at least one hit to pace the 14 hit attack. Also, Juan Peralta got his first at-bat since June 3rd in the eighth inning, but struck out.

The Lugnuts stayed seven games back of Southwest Michigan with the win after the Devil Rays defeated Burlington. The elimination number for the Lugnuts for the 2005 playoffs dropped to seven.

Lansing wraps up its series in Wisconsin tomorrow evening at 8:05 p.m. as they send left hander A.J. Wideman(6-9) to the hill. Wisconsin counters with right hander Cibney Bello (4-3).
