Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- Fernando Perez hit two triples and stole his 52nd base of the season as James Houser shut down the Burlington Bees in an 8-1 Southwest Michigan win at C.O. Brown Stadium on Sunday.
Perez was one triple short of tying the Midwest League record for three in one game, and he is now one three-bagger shy of the team's franchise record set by Brooks Conrad with 14 in 2002. Each Devil Rays hitter had at least one hit. Perez had two runs batted in as well.
James Houser was nearly unhittable picking up his seventh win of the season with seven shutout innings with only five hits and one walk allowed. Houser struck out six batters. The Devil Rays used Perez' leadoff triple in to start the game to score the first run. The lead was extended to 5-0 after a four-run fourth inning. By the eighth, the Bees were down 8-0 before scoring a run off reliever Chris Mason.
The Devil Rays win streak of four games is the first since July 15-18. The team's magic number to make the playoffs is now seven games after Lansing's win in Wisconsin.
Southwest Michigan will host Burlington for the finale on Monday at 7:05 p.m. It is $5 all-you-can-eat Pizza Buffet night from 6:05 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Brandon Mann will start for the Devil Rays against Luis Cota for Burlington.
