FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The Lansing Lugnuts defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 12-1 Sunday afternoon. Aaron Mathews had four hits with two RBI and Yuber Rodriguez drove in four runs for the offense. Danny Core allowed one run on three hits and struck out seven over six innings for the win. Mathews, Rodriguez, and Ryan Klosterman all homered for the Lugnuts.
Lansing (61-65 overall, 24-33 second half) got in front with two runs in the top of the second inning. David Hicks doubled to start the inning. Mathews followed with a double off the center field wall and Hicks stopped at third base, but he scored on an error as the Rattlers were trying to get the ball back into the infield. Klosterman followed with an RBI groundout.
The Lugnuts sent nine men to the plate in the top of the fourth and scored six times for an 8-0 lead. The big hits in the inning were an RBI double by Mathews, a two run single by Rodriguez, and a two-run homer by Joshua Lex.
Back-to-back home runs by Mathews and Klosterman in the fifth inning made it 10-0 Lansing.
The Rattlers (70-57, 31-26) got on the board against Core in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homer by Oswaldo Navarro. Navarro had three of Wisconsin's five hits on the day.
But, Lansing got a two run double from Rodriguez in the top of the sixth for a 12-1 advantage and that wrapped the scoring up for the afternoon.
The final game of the series is Monday night. Cibney Bello (4-3, 4.76ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Rattlers. AJ Wideman (6-9, 5.15ERA) is slated to start for the Lugnuts. Game time is 7:05pm.
