Cairns' gem propels Swing to split
August 21, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Peoria Chiefs pounded the Swing of the Quad Cities, 14-7, in the first game of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at John O'Donnell Stadium, but Jason Cairns worked four scoreless innings in the second game as the Swing earned a split with the 4-2 victory. With the split, the Swing remain in first place in the MWL-West, dropping their magic number to earn a playoff berth to ten.
In the second game, Quad Cities (68-58, 32-25) jumped to the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Nick Stavinoha singled into center with two outs, and then swiped second base. Chris Patrick lined a single into left to score Stavinoha for a 1-0 Quad Cities lead.
Quad Cities manufactured two more runs in the third inning. Cody Palmer ripped a double into left, and then Matt Lemanczyk bunted him to third base. Matt Shepherd scored Palmer from third with a single for a 2-0 Quad Cities lead. Shepherd aggressively moved to third on a single from Stavinoha, and Patrick dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt for a 3-0 Quad Cities lead.
Casey Rowlett broke an 0-for-20 slump with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning, capping the Swing's scoring.
After Cairns worked four hitless innings in his first professional start, Cory Meacham worked through the fifth inning but allowed a pair of runs in the sixth. Mike Sillman got the game's final six outs for the save.
In the first game, the Chiefs scored five runs in the first inning and eight more in the third on their way to a 14-7 victory. Sam Fuld had four hits, including a three-run double in the third inning, as did Eric Patterson and Luis Rivera. Alan Rick blasted a two-run homer to cap a five-run first-inning rally as part of his three hits on the game.
Swing starter Michael Cooper got the loss, allowing 13 runs (12 earned) in two-plus innings of work, both season highs for the Swing this season. Offensively, Stavinoha and Swackhamer each blasted two-run homers during a four-run fourth inning, while Lemanczyk and Shepherd each had two hits.
