
Lugnuts pound Whitecaps

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts used 11 hits and a five run fourth inning to overwhelm the West Michigan Whitecaps 9-3 on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark. Lansing has had double-digit hits in each game of the series.
The Lugnuts took an early lead in the third inning when Luke Hetherington and Anthony Garibaldi hit consecutive doubles to make it a 1-0 game.
After the Whitecaps tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third, Lansing plated five runs in the fourth to take control of the game. Jesus Gonzalez, Al Quintana, and Yuber Rodriguez all reached to begin the inning and load the bases for Sean Shoffit. Shoffit then tripled into left-center to clear the bases and give the Lugnuts a 4-1 lead. Shoffit would race home on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 5-1. The next batter Hetherington beat out an infield single and scored two batters later on a Jacob Butler double to right-center field to make it 6-1.
West Michigan cut the lead in half when Jeramy Laster cracked a two-run homer to left-center field. The homer made the score 6-3.
Three more runs crossed the plate for the Lugnuts in the seventh inning to open a six run lead. Rodriguez singled home Joey Metropoulos to give the Lugnuts a 7-3 lead. Shoffit then singled to right to plate two more runs to make it 9-3.
Shoffit finished the game 2-for-4 with five RBI.
Casey McKenzie (2-4) earned the win for the Lugnuts, throwing 5 2/3 innings and surrendering three runs on five hits. He did fan nine batters in the game.
Matt O'Brien (0-1) took the loss for the Whitecaps, giving up six runs on seven hits through four innings of work.
Lansing (65-59, 25-32) will try to take the series win over West Michigan (79-45, 38-19) on Monday evening. Adrian Martin (7-1, 4.41) will hurl for the Lugnuts, while Burke Badenhop (12-3, 2.98) will take the ball for the Whitecaps. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
