Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (28-28, 63-63) rallied from an early 5-0 deficit and held off the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (19-38, 46-81) in the late innings to pick up the 8-7 win in front of 8,457 fans at Fifth Third Field on Sunday afternoon. Carlos Fisher (WP, 11-5) settled down after a rough start to earn his team-high 11th victory, and Jose Rojas (S, 3) struck out all four hitters he faced to preserve the victory for the Dragons who move to within 3.5 games of the Fort Wayne Wizards for the second half wild card spot.

Wisconsin jumped all over Fisher early on for five runs in the first two innings. Kuo Hui Lo walked to start the game, went to second on an errant pickoff attempt, and scored on Jeff Flaig's RBI single in the first. Ron Garth followed with a single, and Johan Limonta added an RBI single to make it 2-0. Garth would eventually score on a sacrifice fly from Gerardo Avila to make it 3-0 after ½ inning of baseball.

The Timber Rattlers added two more runs in the second. Lo was on first base with two outs when Flaig tripled to bring him home. Ron Garth grounded to third base, but Bradley Key couldn't handle it, and the error scored Flaig to make the game 5-0 Wisconsin. After that, Fisher settled down considerably. He allowed just one more hit the rest of the afternoon, and set down 13 in a row to close out his night with 7.0 IP, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits with nine strikeouts.

While Fisher was settling down, the Dragons bats were heating up. Craig Tatum singled off starter Nick Allen (ND) to lead off the third. Allen injured himself on the pitch, and left the game. In came Roman Martinez (LP, 1-6), and he immediately hit Key with a pitch. A fielder's choice by Josh Holden put runners on the corners, and Tatum scored on a wild pitch to make the game 5-1.

Dayton then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth on just three hits. Jay Bruce reached on a fielding error by Limonta, and then stole second. Adam Rosales was hit by a pitch, and BJ Szymanski picked up an RBI single to right to make it 5-2. Bobby Mosby grounded into a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners with one out. Tatum then grounded to third, and Flaig held the ball too long as Tatum beat it out for an RBI infield single. Bradley Key was then walked and the bases were loaded. That was the end of the day for Martinez, as he was replaced by Edgar Guaramato (ND). Guaramato hit both Holden and Mike Griffin with pitches, forcing in a run each time to tie the game at five. Eric Eymann then singled to right, scoring two more, and the Dragons led 7-5.

The Dragons made it 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth when Jay Bruce crushed his 16th home run of the season. The blast that landed on First Street beyond the right field fence snapped a 0-for-12 skid since returning from injury for the Dragons slugger.

The home run by Bruce proved to be the difference as Wisconsin scored twice in the eight off Derrik Lutz (ND). Garth singled to start the inning, and scored on a triple by Limonta to make it 8-6. Adam Moore followed with a sacrifice fly to right to cut the Dragons lead to one. Gerardo Avila struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch. After an infield single and a fielder's choice, there were runners at second and third with two outs. In came Jose Rojas, and he struck out Eddy Hernandez to end the threat. Rojas then struck out the side in the ninth to save the victory for his teammate Carlos Fisher.

The Dragons wrap up the four game series at Fifth Third Field against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Monday evening. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM; Monday's first pitch is slated for 7:00 PM. RHP Daniel Guerrero (4-4, 4.36 ERA) will make the start for Dayton. The Timber Rattlers will counter with LHP Paul Fagan (4-13, 5.14 ERA).
