Devil Rays take down Chiefs

Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release


The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays defeated the Peoria Chiefs by a score of 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at C.O. Brown Stadium. The win brings them one game closer to Fort Wayne for the final playoff spot in the Eastern division because Fort Wayne fell to South Bend.

Neil Walton had his best game as a pro at the plate. Walton who entered the game with a .183 batting average went 4-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. He brought his average up ten points to .193.

Matt Walker got the start for the Rays and tossed five innings. Walker fanned seven batters and gave up three hits with two earned runs.

Aaron Walker entered in relief in the sixth inning and lasted two frames. He gave up two hits and struck out three.

Newcomer Celso Rondon, who pitched the ninth inning of the no-hitter on Thursday, hurled the final two frames. Rondon was reached for three hits and one earned run while striking out three. With his performance, he picked up his first save of year in Southwest Michigan.

The Devil Rays pitchers had eleven K's on the day and they are now four strikeouts away from breaking the franchise record for strikeouts in a season.

J.T. Hall helped the Rays by going 3-4 with a double and 3 RBI.

The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays and Peoria Chiefs will square off again on Monday in the final game of their four game series. It's Munchie Monday. Every Monday home game at C.O. Brown there is a select concessions item that is drastically discounted. This Monday's special is $1 pulled pork sandwiches. It's a special early game so the Devil Rays are inviting all of the third shifters from the community a chance to check out the Rays.
