Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (August 20, 2006) Coming home didn't change the fortunes of the Burlington Bees (22-35, 57-67) as the team lost 3-2 to the Swing of the Quad Cities (34-22, 68-56) this afternoon at Community Field. The Swing won the first two games of this series at John O'Donnell Stadium and now lead the season series 3-2. The Bees have dropped five in a row overall and are a season-low 13 games under .500.
The Bees got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Brady Everett lined a double into right-center field, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Carlos Arroyo. Swing starter Donnie Smith got a double play ball to get out of the inning and made that run unearned. Smith (3-2) wouldn't allow another run through 5.2 innings and ended up with the win.
The Swing got the lead in the top of the third against Bees' starter Mario Santiago. After retiring the first six batters in a row, and striking out the side in the second, he walked Casey Rowlett to start the inning. Rowlett stole second and went to third when the throw sailed into centerfield. Chad Gabriel drove him in with a single to tie the game and Henry Guerrero singled on a hit and run to put runners on the corners with no outs. Santiago induced a double play off the bat of Dan Nelson, but that also got Gabriel in from third for a 2-1 Swing lead.
The game was still 2-1 into the eighth with Santiago still working for the Bees. After getting the first two batters to ground out, John Jay singled and the Bees brought Cody Harkcom in out of the bullpen. Harkcom gave up a base hit to Mark Hamilton and hit Tyler Greene with a pitch to load the bases. CJ Smith hit a ball hard off the glove of Mario Lisson at third attempting to make a back-handed play. The ball rolled away for an infield single and an RBI to extend the Swing lead to 3-1 before Harkcom goarkcom got Rowlett to ground out to end the inning. Santiago (2-6) was charged with the final run also. He set a new career-high with 7.2 innings pitched and matched a career-high with six strikeouts, but got the loss.
Jason Motte pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief behind Smith and Jon Mikrut took over for the bottom of the eighth. Jose Duarte led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, and scored when Lisson and Miguel Vega also added singles. Vega had 3 RBI in the last two games and leads the club with 70 on the year. The Swing turned to closer Chris Perez after Vega's hit and he got a popout and lineout to end the eighth and worked a scoreless ninth to preserve the win for his ninth save.
The Bees and Swing wrap up this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Luke Hochevar, the #1 overall pick in this year's draft, will make his second start for the Bees and have his pitch count extended to 50. LH Adam Daniels (7-10, 3.10) will start for the Swing. The gates open at 6:00 for the final Dollar Monday of the season presented by Miller Lite. General admission tickets, hot dogs, pizza, popcorn, and cans of Pepsi products are $1 and canes of Miller products are 2-for-$3. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
