LANSING - Adrian Martin threw seven spectacular innings for the Lansing Lugnuts in a 6-0 shutout win over the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays before 5,215 fans at Oldsmobile Park Friday night.
Martin (8-3), who had dropped his previous two starts, allowed just four hits in the outing and fanned four batters. Adam Rogers made his Class-A debut for Lansing by throwing the final two frames an preserving the shutout.
The Lugnuts took the lead in the first frame. Luke Hetherington singled to lead-off the game and scored on a Joey Metropoulos double to make it 1-0. The single extended Hetherington's on-base streak to 22 games.
Lansing poured it on in the fourth inning, sending ten batters to the plate. Brian Pettway and David Hicks each singled before Anthony Garibaldi singled off of pitcher Greg Reinhard to score Pettway and make it 2-0. Al Quintana then ripped a two-run single to right to extend the Lugnuts lead to 4-0. After Jesus Gonzalez notched the Lugnuts fifth consecutive hit, Hetherington lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Quintana and make it a 5-0 game. Metropoulos added an RBI single in the inning as well to push the advantage to 6-0 for the Lugnuts.
Reinhard (6-10) took the loss for the Rays, allowing six runs on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Friday nights action also sealed the Lugnuts' first round playoff opponent, as the South Bend SilverHawks topped Fort Wayne. Lansing and the SilverHawks will meet Wednesday in Round 1 of the Midwest League playoffs.
Lansing (70-64, 30-37) and Southwest Michigan (61-75, 29-38) will meet again Saturday night at Oldsmobile Park. Casey McKenzie (2-5, 3.41) will hurl for the Lugnuts, while Matt Walker (5-4, 2.77) will take the ball for the Devil Rays. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
