
Bees Drop Dramatic Finale to Kernels

Cedar Rapids, IA (August 31, 2006) "" After rallying for two runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie and taking a lead in the top of the eleventh inning, the Burlington Bees (27-39, 62-71) ran out of magic in the bottom of the 12th inning. Larry Infante's two-out line drive went through Carlos Arroyo in right field for the game-winning hit as Stantrel Smith scored from third to give the Cedar Rapids Kernels (31-34, 62-72) a 7-6 win at Veterans Memorial Stadium tonight. The win gives the Kernels a split of this four-game series and an 8-7 win of the season series.
The Kernels got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Brad Coon singled, stole second, went to third on a base hit by Anderson Rosario, and scored on a base hit by Jordan Renz. The Bees came back with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Brady Everett singled, Carlos Arroyo doubled, and both scored on a one-out single by Felix Peralta.
The Kernels took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth. Mark Trumbo singled and scored on a triple by Josh Davies and Coon brought Davies in with a sacrifice fly to center for a 3-2 Kernels lead. In the top of the sixth, Renz singled and Dallas Morris walked after a long at-bat to force Bees' starter Angelo Morales out of the game. Eliezer Garcia came in and got Infante to hit a ground ball right to Everett at first, but the throw to second was wide for an error allowing Renz to score and runners to end up at second and third. Garcia struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning, but the Kernels led 4-2.
Kernels' starter Tommy Mendoza came out after five innings and Cngs and Chris Howell pitched a scoreless sixth before giving up a run in the seventh. Jeff Howell led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a pair of groundouts to get the Bees to within one at 4-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Coon laid down a bunt single, went to third on a base hit by Rosario, and scored on a groundout by Stantrel Smith to extend the Kernels lead back to 5-3.
Mike Pete pitched a scoreless eighth for the Kernels and they brought in closer Tim Mattison for the ninth. Everett led off with a single, but was forced at second as Arroyo reached on a fielder's choice. Howell singled and Valentino Arce ran for him at first. A walk to Peralta loaded the bases and Omar Pena drove in Arroyo with a sacrifice fly to right to get to within 5-4. Ethien Santana then hit a bouncing ball to the right side. Davies ranged to his left and fielded the ball in shallow right field, but threw wide of first for an error allowing Arce to score and tie the game. It was Mattison's first blown save of the season. Cody Harkcom had come on in relief for the Bees in the eighth inning and pitched a scoreless ninth to force extra innings.
In the top of the eleventh, Pena lined a two-out single off of Brendan Wilson and scored on a triple by Santana to give the Bees a 6-5 lead, but the Kernels tied the game against Chris Hayes in the bottom of the inning. Trumbo singled, pinch-runner Marco Albano stole second, and scored on a base hit by Flint Wipke after Santana misplayed the ball in left for an error. In the bottom of the 12th, Smith lined a one-out double to left, Renz was intentionally walked, and Morris reached on a fielder's choice as Renz was forced at second to set up Infante for the game-winner. Hayes (3-6) was charged with the blown save and the loss. Wilson (1-0) pitched the final three innings for the Kernels and got the win.
The Bees start the final series of the season tomorrow night at Community Field against the Swing of the Quad Cities. RH Luke Hochevar (0-0, 0.00) will make his final start on a T-G-I Bud Night. Game time is 7:00 and the gates open at six. The game broadcast will be available on the internet only through the Bees' website at www.gobees.com.
