Swing Hang First Loss on Hochevar

September 1, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA - Tyler Greene and Jose Martinez hit solo home runs in the top of the second inning and the Swing of the Quad Cities (41-25, 75-59) made those runs stand up for a 2-1 win over the Burlington Bees (27-40, 62-72) at Community Field tonight. With the win, the Swing clinched the 2nd half Western Division title and a match-up with the Kane County Cougars in the first round of the Midwest League playoffs that start on Wednesday.

Luke Hochevar (0-1) allowed both home runs and got the loss for his first decision in Minor League Baseball. He was 1-1 in his six starts in the independent league earlier this year. The number one overall pick from this year's draft did work a career-high six innings and struck out a career-high six. He allowed just one more hit after the home runs and retired 12 of the final 13 batters that he faced. After the game, Hochevar was promoted to the Wichita Wranglers, the Royals Double-A affiliate in the Texas League. He will join the Wranglers in time to pitch in the Texas League playoffs and the Wranglers roster now features the Royals top pick from each of the last five drafts: Zack Greinke ('02), Chris Lubanski ('03), Billy Butler ('04), and Alex Gordon ('05). Michael Penn finished the final three innings on the mound for the Bees and allowed one hit while striking out five.

Swing starter Tyler Norrick (2-2) limited the Bees to just two hits over six shutout innings while walking three and striking out seven for the win. The Bees only threat against him came in the bottom of the fifth. Jeff Howell reached on an error and with one out, Felix Peralta walked and Omar Pena singled to load the bases. Norrick got out of the jam with a strikeout and a flyout to preserve the shutout.

Matt Trent picked up for Norrick in relief and worked a perfect seventh, but gave up a leadoff double to Eduardo Nunez in the eighth. Jose Duarte moved him to third with a groundout to first, but Trent got Josh Johnson on a broken bat lineout for the second out of the inning. Trent couldn't get out of the inning without a run though as Mario Lisson doubled off the wall in deep center to bring in Nunez and get the Bees to within one. Lisson was stranded as Chris Perez came in and struck out Brady Everett to end the inning. Perez set the Bees down in order in the ninth and earned his 12th save.

The Bees and Swing continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. It will be the Bees' final home game of the season.
