Charleston Lowgators News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (December 10) â The North Charleston Lowgators and North Charleston Elementary School teamed up on December 10 to participate in the NBDL's Read to Achieve community relations program.
Head Coach Doug Marty and all ten players talked to the students about the importance of reading and then read Something Fishy at McDonald Hall by Gordon Korman to them.
"Reading is one of the most important fundamentals you learn in school," guard Corey Benjamin told the third graders. Coach Marty added, "Reading takes you to places all over the world and introduces you to new people and new cultures."
The players also asked the students about their favorite books and shared some of their elementary school stories. The Lowgators handed out books for the students to keep and then signed as many copies as they could.
A film crew taped the event and some of the players and students will be featured in a public service announcement produced by the NBA that will air during NBDL games on ESPN2 and NBA TV.
The NBDL's Read to Achieve program promotes the value of reading and online literacy and encourages families and adults to read regularly with young children.
