Amarillo Dillas News Release
ABILENE, TX - The Amarillo Dillas got away with one on Sunday night against the Coastal Bend Thunder as they stranded the bases loaded in the ninth inning to preserve a 7-4 win over the Thunder at Scott Field at Abilene Christian University.
Dillas starter Ronald Lowe (3-2) was strong through seven innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out nine in the effort. Thunder starter Carlos Rangel (3-3) pitched well, allowing only four runs through seven plus innings and struck out six. Dillas closer Ramon Geronimo earned his sixth save, retiring both batters he faced in the ninth to end the game.
Amarillo would get on the board first in the second inning as Daryl Jones led off with a single and went to second on an Alberto Cruz walk. Jonathan Cisneros and Brian Bueno followed with back-to-back RBI singles for a two-run lead. Cruz would reach again in the fourth inning with a leadoff double and would score on another Cisneros RBI single for a 3-0 lead.
Coastal Bend would tie the game in the sixth. Levy Ventura led off with a single, followed by a Brian Nichols single. Alex Ferndandez hit a potential double-play ball that retired Nichols at second, but was overthrown at first, allowing Ventura to score. Following a strikeout and a pair of walks that loaded the bases, Dustin Smith singled home two runs for a 3-3 tie game.
Amarillo would retake the lead in the eighth as Stephen Douglas led off after getting hit by a pitch. Rangel was replaced by J.J. Trujillo, who allowed Cruz to single and allowed another RBI single from Cisneros. After a wild pitch put runners on second and third, Jermel Lomack singled to score both runners. Lomack would steal second, take third on an Adam De La Garza single and score on a Joaquin Rodriguez RBI single for a 7-3 Dillas lead.
Dillas reliever Frank Corolla pitched a perfect eighth, but Chris Nyman got into trouble in the ninth. Smith and Albert Gonzalez led off with walks, followed by a one-out RBI single by Ventura. After a Nichols walk and a Fernandez strikeout had two outs with the bases loaded, Lamar Guy sent a 1-0 pitch deep to left field, but Cruz made the catch on the warning track to preserve the 7-4 win.
With the win, the Dillas improve to 18-13, while the Thunder fall to 10-20. Thursday, Amarillo will take on Coastal Bend for the second game of a four-game series at 7:05pm. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
