Lowell Hold Off Lake Monsters 4-1 On Saturday At Centennial

BURLINGTON, VT --- Jason Garcia allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings and Sam Travis keyed a three-run third inning with a two-run single as the Lowell Spinners handed the Vermont Lake Monsters a 4-1 loss in New York-Penn League action Saturday evening at historic Centennial Field.

Garcia, making his fourth start for the Spinners on a rehab assignment after pitching the past two seasons with the single-A Greenville Drive of the Carolina League, retired the first eight Lake Monsters he faced before allowing a Brett Vertigan infield single with two outs in the third inning. The only other two baserunners allowed by Garcia were on another infield single in the fourth inning for Ben McQuown and a two-out walk in the fifth to Yairo Munoz.

The Spinners got all the runs they would need in the third inning as they collected three runs on four hits off Vermont starter Joe Michaud (1-2), who started the inning with his first walk of the season in his 21-inning pitched. After a single and sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third, Travis lined a two-run single to center for a 2-0 Lowell advantage. Travis then scored three batters later on a Cole Strugeon RBI single to leftfield. Lowell added another run in the fourth as Raymel Flores scored all the way from second base on a Bryan Hudson infield single to shortstop.

Reliever German Tavares kept the Spinners lead at 4-0 as he set the Lake Monsters down in order in both the seventh and eighth innings, but Vermont got a rally started in the ninth on a Vertigan line drive single to right and Dayton Alexander walk. Carlos Pinales came on in relief of Tavares and got a flyout for the first out before walking Justin Higley to load the bases. Joe Bennie followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Vertigan with the Lake Monsters only run of the game. Pinales then got Jose Brizuela to groundout to end the game and pick up his league-leading fifth save.

Hudson, Sturgeon, Nick Longhi and Jordan Betts each had two hits for Lowell (8-8), while Vertigan had two of Vermont's three hits. Corey Miller, the 10th round pick of the Athletics in the 2014 draft out of Pepperdine University, allowed just one hit with two strikeouts over three scoreless innings in his debut with the Lake Monsters.

After splitting the first two games of the series, the Lake Monsters and Spinners will meet again on Sunday at 5:05 pm in the rubber game of the series. From 4:00 pm when the gates open until 6:00 pm, the Boston Red Sox 1912, 2004, 2007 and 2013 World Series trophies will be on display on the Centennial Field concourse area.
