Saturday, RIVER RATS 5 vs. Devils 2
Albany scored twice in the third period to pull away with a 5-2 win over the Devils. Dave Caruso made his first start of the year in goal for the Devils, and finished the night with 30 saves. Ian Moran recorded his first goal of the season, and Noah Clarke scored for the second game in a row for Lowell.
Sunday, Phantoms 5 vs. DEVILS 4, OT
Philadelphia tied the game with 1:09 remaining in regulation, then won it 59 seconds into overtime on Denis Tolpeko's second goal of the game. Petr Vrana continued his torrid pace, recording 1g-2a-3pts in the loss, and Nicklas Bergfors earned his first points of the season, finishing with 1g-1a-2pts in a game that featured a combined 112 PIM between the two teams.
In the standings
After gaining three points over the weekend, the Devils are tied with Hartford and Portland with 11 points. Lowell trails both Manchester and Springfield by one point in the standings, but plays both teams this upcoming Friday and Saturday night. The Atlantic Division continues to be the tightest in the league, with only seven points separating first-place Providence from last-place Worcester.
Coming Up
On Friday night, the Devils make their first visit of the season to Springfield for a 7:30 p.m. tilt with the Falcons. From there, Lowell goes north of the border for a match-up with the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Devils return to Tsongas Arena next Saturday, November 17 to host the Hartford Wolf Pack. Game time is 7:05 p.m. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a Lowell Devils knit hat, courtesy of Pepsi. For ticket information, contact the Devils at (978) 458-PUCK (7825).
Around the Horns
Petr Vrana continues to have the hot hand for Lowell, having now recorded a total of nine points in 11 games. The Devils C has recorded at least one point in his last three games, tallying 1g-5a-6pts.
As a rookie in 2006-07, Stephen Gionta recorded 7g-8a-15pts. He is on pace to shatter those totals this year, having already recorded 5g-3a-8pts in just 11 games. Gionta scored three goals over the weekend, including two in the third period of Lowell's win over Manchester on Friday night.
Lowell is unbeaten in regulation at home in games decided by only one goal (3-0-1-0). They defeated Manchester 3-2 on Friday night and lost 5-4 in overtime to Philadelphia on Sunday.
The Devils scored a power play goal in all three games over the weekend and in six of their first eleven games. LW Noah Clarke leads the team in scoring during the man advantage with 3g-1a-4pts.
After being assessed 55 PIM during their Sunday tilt with Philadelphia, the Devils nearly doubled their total penalty minutes of the last six home games (57). Despite that, Lowell is tied with Milwaukee for the second fewest PIM (144) in the AHL. Philadelphia currently leads the AHL in PIM with 383.
