Love In The Air As Outlaws Win

April 3, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kansas City Outlaws News Release

It was a magical day at Kemper Arena. A Ladies Day crowd enjoyed great hockey, free stuff, and a very special on-ice wedding between two die-hard fans, Rochelle and John. Oh, and the Outlaws skated to a 5-1 victory over the cross-state Missouri River Otters.

With Jason Ruff back in the lineup after a few games off, the Outlaws were primed to battle the Otters and their NHL hired guns Barret Jackman, Ryan Johnson, Jamal Mayers, and Bryce Salvador. Jan Chovan got the start between the pipes, allowing Maxime Gingras to rest after last night's game.

Kansas City struck early, as Mark Lee scored his 18th goal of the year (Andrei Lupandin, Jason Ruff). Lee beat Otter netminder Kevin Reiter for the tally at 5:28 of the first period.

The Otter's Mark Odut tied things at 1-1 with 6:29 remaining in the frame. Odut was assisted by Justin Quenneville and former Outlaw Mike Dombkiewicz. The intermission arrived with the score still knotted at 1 apiece.

Former Otter and current Outlaw Chad Moore had a busy day tussling with Missouri's Quentin Van Horlick. Van Horlick, who seems to always pick a fight with the Outlaws and usually loses miserably, started a fight with Moore at 12:38 of the second period that energized the Outlaws and led to an explosion of goals.

Jason Ruff scored at 13:00 (Joe Seroski, Lee), and Derek Kern quickly followed with an unassisted tally at 14:06. Lee grabbed his third point of the day with just 37 seconds left in the second period, scoring his 19th of the season (Seroski, Ruff).

Seroski added a third period goal at 12:08 (Lupandin, Ruff), his 38th of the year.

Van Horlick came back for more punishment in the final minutes of the game, trying to face-wash Chad Moore in the corner. Moore responded by pummeling Van Horlick, sending him toppling to the ice. Moore and Van Horlick both picked up 5 minute majors for fighting, which apparently upset Otters mercenary Jamal Mayers. Mayers was escorted off the ice with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and a game misconduct for screaming at the officials. It's a safe bet he wasn't reminding them to set their clocks forward tonight.

The Outlaws win this one at home, 5-1.

Prior to the game, fans took part in a very special occasion for two Outlaws fans. Rochelle and John were married on the South blue line, with about 60 of their family and friends looking on. Rochelle and John wore matching autographed Outlaws replica jerseys, and received a standing ovation when presented to the crowd as husband and wife. The Outlaws wish them both a wonderful life together.

The Outlaws travel to St. Charles tomorrow for a rematch with the Otters. Game time is 1:05 pm and you can catch all the action on 1340 KCKN or live on the web.
