Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell 9-1 to the Louisville Bats Thursday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. With the loss, the Chiefs fall to 2-5 on the homestand.

Louisville scored their first run of the game in the fourth. First baseman Yonder Alonso swatted a double to right to lead off the inning. Two batters later Todd Frazier cracked another double down the left field line, allowing Alonso to score from second. Frazier was stopped from scoring when he was thrown out trying to steal third base later in the inning.

After adding another run in the fifth on Wilkin Castillo's solo home run to right field, the Bats crossed home plate seven times in the sixth inning. With one out and the bases loaded, centerfielder Chris Burke poked a single to center. Alonso and Wladimir Balentien hustled home on the play for Louisville's third and fourth runs of the night. Chris Valaika's drive to center in the next at bat nearly left the stadium, bouncing off the wall for a two-run double. With still only one out, starting pitcher Travis Wood unleashed a double down the left field line to knock in another run for the Bats. Drew Sutton followed with Louisville's fifth hit of the inning and another run batted in. The Bats would score another run later in the inning on a Pete Orr fielding error to stretch the lead to 9-0. The Bats sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning.

Syracuse put up their only run of the night on a Leonard Davis solo home run in the ninth over the fence in right center field. It was Davis' first homer in 24 games with the Chiefs.

Louisville's Travis Wood improved to 4-4 with the win. He threw seven innings of shutout baseball, giving up three hits and one walk. Wood finished the night with eight strikeouts.

Jeff Mandel took the loss for the Chiefs, surrendering nine runs (seven earned) in 5 1/3 innings. He also gave up 10 hits and two walks. Mandel has now allowed at least six runs in back-to-back starts.

The Chiefs end their eight-game homestand Friday night against the Bats. Syracuse will send Craig Stammen (NR) to the mound against Louisville's Chad Reineke (2-4, 2.47). First pitch will be at 7:00.
