Published on April 2, 2002 under ECHL (ECHL) News Release

PRINCETON, N.J. - The East Coast Hockey League announced on Tuesday that Louisiana goaltender Frederic Cloutier has been named the 2002 CCM/ECHL Rookie of the Year as determined in a vote of ECHL coaches. Cloutier will receive the John A. Daley Memorial Trophy, presented annually to the ECHL Rookie of the Year winner.

The 20-year-old Cloutier was 28-5-3 with seven shutouts, a 1.84 goals against average and a .945 save percentage. He broke the ECHL record for lowest goals against average (1.91 by Curtis Sanford of Peoria in 2000-01) and the ECHL record for save percentage (.933 by Columbus' Jeff Salajko in 1997-98). He tied the ECHL record for most shutouts (7 by Richmond's Maxime Gingras in 1998-99 and Jackson's David Brumby in 1999-2000). Under contract to the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League, Cloutier has already been named to the 2002 ECHL All-Rookie Team and was named First-Team All-ECHL on Sunday. He was selected by ECHL coaches to be the starting goaltender for the Southern Conference in the 2002 Sovereign Bank/ECHL All-Star Game on January 22 in Trenton, N.J., and was the ECHL Goalie of the Month for November.
