LouCity Players in the Gold Cup
June 20, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release
Two Louisville City players, Speedy Williams and Shaun Francis, will play for their native Jamaica Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Gold Cup. Jamaica is taking on El Salvador in the Group Stage (Group C).
Both Speedy and Shaun Francis played the full 90 minutes in a 3-2 win over Honduras in the first game of the Gold Cup, and Jamaica currently leads their group.
For sound: Louisville City coach John Hackworth spoke about the pair in his press conference Thursday (near the end of the 10 minute presser).
Quotes of note from Thursday:
Hackworth on Speedy and Francis playing for Jamaica:
"I'm happy for them. I'm proud of them. For both of them to start and go the full 90 minutes in a win against Honduras, it's an excellent start for them. Obviously they were both playing during a friendly against the United States earlier so as much as we miss them and we would love to have them here, we are really proud of the way they represented themselves and our club at the international level."
Hackworth on Devon "Speedy" Williams:
"Speedy is one of the most unheralded players in our league. There's lots of guys in this locker room who we believe could be playing at a higher level, and Speedy is definitely one of those guys. Maybe his international tag has deterred some MLS clubs from looking at him, but he has certainly proved his worth for us. And winning three straight USL Championships? I don't know that there's anybody who can claim that - maybe (Sean) Totsch has three rings - very people have done that, and it's impressive."
What makes Speedy so effective?
"He's technically very good on the ball, he has good instincts, finds really good pockets to get into so he can receive the ball and play forward and he's got a good engine. He goes box to box really effectively and those are all qualities that have allowed him to be very effective."
