Great Lakes Loons News Release
Fort Wayne, Indiana - The Loons made sure they left Parkview Field on a winning note and knocked off the TinCaps twice in one night on Thursday.
The Loons took game one 1-0 and then rallied to win game two 2-1. With the wins, the Loons (22-25) end a five-game skid and move to 2-3 on their nine-game road trip to end the month of May. The TinCaps (18-29) took the five-game series with a doubleheader sweep of their own on Tuesday and a win in a rain-shortened game on Wednesday.
Right-handed starter Kevin Guzman (3-4) led the Loons to a win in game one with his strongest performance of the season. He saved the bullpen for game two with a six-inning performance in which he allowed no runs on two hits with no walks and a career-high eight strikeouts.
Great Lakes scored the game's only run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Jimmy Allen. The Loons tried to score two on the play, but the 'Caps threw out Brant Whiting at the plate to end the inning.
The lone run would suffice. Righty Kyle Hooper came out of the pen and earned his first save of the season. The native of Saugus, California allowed a leadoff walk and a single, but preserved the game one win.
Fort Wayne scored first in the nightcap. Right-handed starter Brandon Martinez, in his second start of the season, allowed a double and an RBI triple to start the second. The TinCaps took a 1-0 lead, but Martinez retired 12 of his final 13 batters and Loons hung around until late.
The Loons mustered one hit against game two starter Jose Castillo, who made his Midwest League debut on Thursday. The Venezuelan southpaw allowed one hit-to countryman Josmar Cordero-through five innings.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, the final inning of a doubleheader game, the Loons still trailed 1-0. Jacob Scavuzzo sent a single into center and Spencer Navin worked a five-pitch walk from right-hander Colby Blueberg (0-1). The reliever entered the game with a 0.64 ERA, but blew his third save of the season when Kelvin Ramos ripped a full-count double down the line in left to give the Loons a 2-1 lead. Ramos rallied from an 0-2 hole to work the count full.
Michael Ahmed scored the go-ahead run for the Loons after field manager Luis Matos entered Ahmed into the game as a pinch runner for Navin.
In the bottom of the seventh, Matos was ejected for the first time in his managerial career over a disputed call at second base. Fort Wayne's Edwin Moreno singled with one out off righty reliever Karch Kowalczyk (2-1) stole second under the tag of Jimmy Allen.
The Loons circled the wagons in Matos' absence, and although Kowalczyk walked Nick Vilter to put two on with one out, a groundout to second from Chase Jensen ended the night.
With five games of the nine-game road swing under their belts, the Loons journey to the Bluegrass State for the first time this season to meet Bowling Green. First pitch in the four-game slate with the Hot Rods is set for 8:05 p.m. EDT on ESPN100.9-FM
The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
