Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, Ky. - Bowling Green dropped their third consecutive game for just the second time this year - and first since April 14-16 - after getting shellacked in the opening game of a four-game series against Great Lakes, falling 9-2 in front of 3,740 patrons at Bowling Green Ballpark Friday night.
Already staked to a 1-0 heading to the top of the fourth inning, Great Lakes (23-25) delivered five runs on five hits in the frame, sending nine men to bat against Hot Rods starter Brent Honeywell (4-3), who set career highs in both hits (10) and runs allowed (six), while walking one and striking out four over 5.0 innings pitched.
Five of the first six Loons reached base safely to begin the fourth inning, and three of the first four reached on consecutive singles from Alex Santana, Jacob Scavuzzo and Brant Whiting before Kelvin Ramos plated two on his single to centerfield, but a misplay by Thomas Milone cleared the bags and allowed Ramos to take third base on Milone's first error of the year, putting Great Lakes ahead 4-0.
Ramos himself would score on a Jimmy Allen groundout, while Mike Ahmed, who reached on a walk, came home on Alex Verdugo's two-out RBI double down the right-field line, making for a 6-0 cushion.
Bowling Green (27-22) had little success against spot-starter Joe Broussard (3-2), who worked a career-best 5.0 innings permitting just two hits while fanning a career-high seven.
Milone set the table for the only run on Broussard's record in the bottom of the fourth, smacking a leadoff triple into left-centerfield and coming in to score on a Riley Unroe sacrifice fly, cutting the Loons lead to 6-1.
Great Lakes got two more runs in the top of the seventh inning against Ryan Pennell via Johan Mieses' RBI double and Scavuzzo's sacrifice fly, 8-1 Loons.
Unroe scored the second run of the game for the Hot Rods in the bottom of the seventh inning, coming home on Mac James' two-out single with runners at the corners, making it an 8-2 Loons edge.
Scavuzzo came calling again in the ninth cranking a RBI double off Mike Franco, advancing the lead to 9-2.
Of Bowling Green's six hits, Unroe had the only multi-hit game, collecting singles in the first and seventh frames, along with his fourth-inning RBI. Scavuzzo went 4-for-4 for the Loons with two RBI and a run scored, while Whiting added three hits and a run as well.
In a pitching rematch from April 29, Greg Harris (2-4, 2.31) opposes fireballer Grant Holmes (3-0, 3.24) in the Saturday's 6:05 p.m. CDT tilt at Bowling Green Ballpark, as the Hot Rods look to put an end to their three game skid.
