Long Night Results in a Win for Aberdeen

NILES, OH - The IronBirds and Scrappers waited out an hour and 46-minute rain delay in the top of the ninth on Wednesday night and when the teams returned to the field it was Aberdeen that struck right away. The Birds plated two runs in the top of the ninth and went on to a pick up a 3-1 series opening victory.

After scoring a franchise record 21 runs on Tuesday night in Aberdeen, the IronBirds struck first on Wednesday in Mahoning Valley. With one in the top of the second, SS Joel Hutter singled to right field. 1B Doug Bream followed with an opposite field single into left and then RF Lucas Herbst put the Birds on the board with a RBI into right. Hutter scored on the play to give the IronBirds a 1-0 lead.

The Scrappers did not wait long to tie the game up at one. 1B Erik Gonzalez led off the bottom of the third with a single to right field. With 2B Robel Garcia at the plate and Gonzalez at first, C Pedro Perez tried to pickoff Gonzalez. Perez's throw skied over Doug Bream's head into right field. Gonzalez advanced from first to third on the throwing error. After Robel Garcia flied out to shallow center, SS Jairo Kelly hit a double down the first baseline to score Gonzalez.

The score remained tied at one until the rains came in the top of the ninth inning.

When the rain subsided after an hour and 46-minute rain delay, the IronBirds quickly loaded the bases against RHP Rafael Homblert. LF Anthony Vega came through in the clutch with no outs in the ninth. Vega lined a single into right field that scored Boss from third. Later on in the frame, 1B Doug Bream scored on a Homblert wild pitch.

RHP Jose Nivar tossed a scoreless bottom of the ninth to pick up the save on the night.

On the hill for Aberdeen, RHP Juan Guzman allowed one run, zero earned, on seven hits over a season-high six innings of work. Guzman's counterpart, RHP Jake Sisco surrendered one run on five hits over five innings pitched. Sisco struck out two and walked none.

RHP Ken Wise (1-0) picked up the win after he tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief. Jack Wagoner (0-1) got the loss out of the Scrappers' pen.

Aberdeen and Mahoning Valley will game two of the three-game series at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio on Thursday night. LHP Cameron Coffey (0-2, 10.38) will make his third start of the year for the IronBirds while the Scrappers will turn to RHP Luis DeJesus (1-0, 0.53). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network set to begin at 6:50 p.m.
