Vermont Rallies In 8th Inning For 2-1 Win Over Hudson Valley

BURLINGTON, VT --- Austin Booker's two-out RBI infield single scored pinch runner Dayton Alexander with the go ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Vermont Lake Monsters a 2-1 win over the Hudson Valley Renegades in New York-Penn League action Wednesday afternoon at historic Centennial Field

With the game tied at one, Bruce Maxwell led off the eighth against Dylan Floro (2-1) with a ground ball single to left and pinch runner Alexander was advanced to second on a Chad Lewis sacrifice bunt.  After an intentional walk to Sam Roberts, Rhett Stafford grounded a pitch back to the mound and was just safe at first on what could have been an inning -ending double play. That moved Alexander to third and he scored the eventual winning run when Booker grounded a single deep into the hole that shortstop Ryan Dunn was able to grab, but could not get enough on the throw to get Booker at first.

Hudson Valley got its only run of the game in the third when Charles Epperson led off the inning with a home run off the leftfield foul pole for a 1-0 Renegades lead. Vermont was able to tie the contest in the fifth by scoring a run without the benefit of a hit. Chris Bostick and Brett Vertigan led off the inning with back-to-back walks, then advanced to second and third on a one-out double steal before Bostick scored on a John Wooten RBI groundout to short.

Vermont starter Chris Lamb allowed just the solo home run on two hits over three innings, while reliever Logan Chitwood tossed three scoreless innings of relief. Stuart Pudenz (1-0) struckout three in two hitless innings to pick up the victory, while Austin House worked around a leadoff infield single and one-out walk in the ninth to earn his second save.

Booker finished with two of Vermont's seven hits in the contest, while Justin O'Conner was 2-for-4 with a double for Hudson Valley (9-8). Neither team could get a big hit in the game as the Lake Monsters went 2-for-13 (both infield single) and the Renegades 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

The two teams will play the second of the three-game series at Centennial on Thursday starting at 7:05 pm with Andres Avila scheduled to start for the Lake Monsters on "Inhalant Abuse Awareness" Night at the ballpark. The Lake Monsters have teamed up with the Alliance for Consumer Education to create a New England-wide program to "Strike Out Inhalant Abuse" at six Minor League ballparks in six different New England states this summer.
