
Long Island uses 13 hits to earn twinbill split

(Central Islip, N.Y.) - The Long Island Ducks split a day/night doubleheader with the Bridgeport Bluefish on Saturday at Suffolk County Sports Park, taking game two 8-6 after falling in the opener 10-5.
In game one, Long Island struck the scoreboard first with a two-run second inning against Bridgeport starter Denny Stark. Brendan Monaghan scored on an error and Joey Gathright hit a RBI single to right, giving the Ducks a 2-0 lead.
The Bluefish responded with four runs in the top of the third against Ducks' starter Jake Dittler. Tike Redman's two-run single and Josh Phelps' two-run homer to left did the damage. Bridgeport extended their lead to 9-2 in the fifth on Luis Lopez' grand slam to right and Hiram Bocachica's solo blast to center.
The Ducks closed the gap to 9-5 with a three-run seventh, highlighted by Robinson Cancel's RBI single and Matt Esquivel's two-run base hit.
Stark (8-4) earned the win, tossing six innings, allowing five hits and two runs, with eight strikeouts. Dittler (10-11) took the loss, surrendering nine runs on eight hits in five innings.
In the nightcap, Bridgeport struck early with a four-run first against Ducks' starter Randy Keisler. Steve Moss clubbed a three-run homer to left-center field, and Phelps made it back-to-back blasts with a solo shot to center.
The Ducks trimmed the lead to one with a run in the second and two more in the third against Bluefish starter Kevin Mannix. Matt Padgett hit a RBI single, Gathright connected on a solo homer to right, and Willis Otanez laced a RBI double to left.
After Bridgeport got two of the runs back to make it 6-3, Long Island tied the game at six with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, capped off by Cancel's sacrifice fly to center. The Ducks took the lead for good in the sixth on Otanez' RBI single, which put the Flock ahead 7-6.
Keisler (4-0) picked up the victory, allowing five hits and six runs with eight strikeouts in six innings. Mannix (10-6) suffered the loss, yielding seven runs (four earned) and ten hits in six innings. Bill Simas picked up his second save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Long Island and Bridgeport continue their four-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:35 PM, with the Suffolk County Sports Park gates opening at 12:35. Fans will be invited onto the field prior to game time to meet the 2010 Long Island Ducks, as well as after the game for Kids Run the Bases, presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Duck Tales (Game One): Robinson Cancel's seventh inning single extended his on-base streak to 37 games. The streak is currently the longest in the Atlantic League this season, seven more than the next highest total...Brendan Monaghan picked up two hits in the game, collecting his 13th two-hit contest this season. The catcher also now has 18 multi-hit games in 2010...With two RBI in the game, Matt Esquivel tied Erick Monzon for the team-lead in two-RBI games this season with 13. Esquivel now has 21 multi-RBI contests in 2010.
