Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 5, 2010) - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Long Island Ducks 8-4 on Sunday afternoon in front of a past-capacity crowd of 6,095 at Suffolk County Sports Park.
The Ducks got to work early with a two-spot in the first inning against Bridgeport starter Luis Gonzalez. Willis Otanez' RBI single to right field and Javier Colina's a sacrifice fly to center did the damage.
The Bluefish tied the game with two runs of their own in the second against Ducks' starter Daryl Harang on Luis Lopez' RBI groundout and Victor Mercedes' solo homer to left. Long Island grabbed the lead back with two more runs in the third, courtesy of Robinson Cancel's RBI single to right and Otanez' RBI double to center.
Bridgeport would jump in front for good with a five-spot in the fourth. Steve Moss led off the frame with a solo blast to left, and four batters later, Joe Jiannetti connected on a grand slam to left-center, giving the `Fish a 7-4 advantage.
Gonzalez (8-3) picked up the victory, tossing six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, with five strikeouts. Harang (4-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing nine hits and eight runs in eight and two-thirds innings.
Otanez led the Ducks at the plate with three hits and two RBI while Erick Monzon and Joey Gathright each collected two hits.
The Ducks will host a day/night doubleheader on Monday, as they face the Newark Bears in game one before closing out their four-game seriesagainst the Bluefish in the nightcap. Game time for the opener is set for 12:00 PM, with the Suffolk County Sports Park gates opening at 11:00 AM, while first pitch for game two is slated for 6:35 PM, with the ballpark gates opening at 5:35. Duck Tales: With a walk in the first inning, Robinson Cancel extended his on-base streak to 39 games. The streak is the longest in the Atlantic League this season, six more than the next highest total, held by Bridgeport's Steve MossWillis Otanez picked up his second three-hit game in a row with a double and two singles. Otanez now has three multi-hit games as a member of the Ducks. The first baseman also picked up two RBI for the second consecutive game and third with the Ducks.
