Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y.) - Kevin Haverbush came to Long Island with a reputation of coming up with the big hit. Tonight however, it was where he hit it that gave the Ducks the 6-5 win over Somerset in the 10th.
The Massapequa native hit a grounder to third that appeared to be an inning-ending double play, however second baseman George Sandel had the ball drop out of his hand on the turn to send Bucky Jacobsen all the way home from second with the game-winning run.
Todd Erdos (4-3) picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings. Mike Johnson (1-2) absorbed the loss after allowing an unearned run in two-thirds of an inning. Ducks starter Pete Hartmann fanned nine batters and allowed a run on six hits and a pair of walks over five frames. Somerset starter Keith Ramsey did not factor into the decision after a gritty performance that saw the southpaw strike out six while allowing five runs (three earned) on 13 hits in nine innings of work.
Jacobsen led the Ducks 14-hit evening, finishing 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Mel Stocker, Carlos Hernandez, Rob Cafiero and Brad King each registered a pair of hits. King hit his third home run of the season in the third while Elvis Pena swiped a pair of bases and Haverbush drilled a triple.
With a single in the first inning, Stocker extended his hitting streak to 22 games. The centerfielder is now five games shy of tying Billy Hall's Atlantic League mark of 27 (Somerset, 2005).
Long Island and Somerset will play game two of their three-game set on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The Atlantic League's All-Time wins leader Tim Cain (0-0) will make his first start of the season against Somerset's Todd Moser (1-2). Splish Splash will present the first 1,500 fans with floppy caps. Chris King and David Weiss will call all of the action live from Citibank Park starting at 6:50 p.m. on WLIE (540 AM) Radio. The game can also be heard via streaming Web cast on www.liducks.com by clicking on the radio icon. Tickets for this and all Ducks home games can be purchased by stopping by the Citibank Park Box Office in person (M-F, 10-6; Saturdays 10-2), visiting www.liducks.com or by calling 631-940-TIXX today.
