Bears pound Road Warriors for win, 10-5

NEWARK, NJ - June 16, 2006 - The Newark Bears, led by left fielder Jose Herrera pounded the Road Warriors for 10 runs on a season high 16 hits in front of 5,671 fans Friday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, to earn the 10-5 victory.

Herrera finished the day 4-for-5 with a single, double, home run, two runs scored, and four RBI. His double in the bottom of the first inning gave the Bears a 1-0 lead, and he would later come around to score on an RBI double by third baseman Lipso Nava.

Five other Newark Bears had multiple hits in the game, including catcher Jonathan Thomas going 2-for-3 a single, double, one run scored, and one RBI. With the score tied at 3, Thomas led off the bottom of the fifth with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored when second baseman Liu Rodriguez grounded out to second base. With one out and shortstop Donaldo Mendez on base, Herrera delivered his third home run of the season to right field, to give Newark a 6-3 edge. Designated hitter Dario Delgado gave the Bears a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run, his third of the season, to left field.

Bears starter Joe Gannon (3-2) earned the victory after striking out six batters in seven innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits, while Road Warriors starter Kyle Goldwater (3-2) took the loss after pitching 7 2/3 innings, giving up all 10 runs and 16 hits.

Road Warriors shortstop Derek Barrows led the way for the Road Warriors going 2-for-4 with a triple, and three RBI.

The Bears and Road Warriors continue the three-game weekend series Saturday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05pm. Carlos Mirabal (0-0) will make his second start for the Bears, while Matt Scheuing (1-0) takes the mound for the Road Warriors. Gates open at 5:05pm to Little League Night at The Den, with the first 1,500 children (14 and under) receive a 28" Little League bat presented by IDT.
