Lakeland Loggerheads News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. â The Lakeland Loggerheads came out flying last night in their game versus the Alabama Slammers.
Team captain Rob Schweyer opened the scoring less than five minutes into the first period assisted by Bobby Clouston and Lenny Bonanno. Loggerheads All Stars Jim Callahan and Chris Cerrella followed with back-to-back goals to give the Loggerheads a 3-0 cushion heading into the third period.
The Slammers stormed back as the third stanza opened on a pair of goals from Chad Peck and the game tying goal from Jeff Mead.
The teams battled deep into the period trading chances back and forth before Harper was able to wrist the puck past Slammers goaltender Fred Beuabien to give Lakeland the lead for good.
"It was a great setup from Evan(Levi) and Bobby(Clouston)," said Harper. "They got me the puck right out in front of the net and I was fortunate enough to put it in."
The Loggerheads head to Orlando for the first of a home and home series with the dreaded Orlando Seals on Friday, Jan. 30th and back in Lakeland on Saturday the 31st. Saturday is "Bite the Seals" night and There will be a "Seal Eating Contest" where fans will try and eat the most cake (decorated like an Orlando Seal of course) without using their hands, "Bobbing for Seals", "Seal Bowling", a "Seal Toss", and a "Bite the Seals" sign and spirit contest where fans are encouraged to make, bring and display any signs or props showing which team has the best fans in the WHA2.
Also, Snapper, the Loggerheads newly introduced mascot, and Sealvester will go head-to-head in a special "Mascot Puck Handling Race". And, as if that wasn't enough, the Loggerettes Dance Team and the Seals "Hotties Girls" will battle it out in the stands to see just who's fans have the most team spirit.
Fans from both teams are encouraged to go all out to support their team. Don't let your rival get the best of you!!.
The Loggerheads face off with the Alabama Slammers, Jacksonville Barracudas, Orlando Seals, Miami Manatees and the Macon Trax in the WHA2's inaugural season. All games will be broadcast on www.irn.fm.
