Lakeland Loggerheads News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. â With a Loggerheads player in the penalty box for tripping, shorthanded 4 on 3, and less than a minute left in overtime, Macon's David Deeves broke in on Lakeland goaltender Carl Poissant on a controversial offsides non-call and scored giving the Trax the 6-5 OT victory.
Curtis Sayler gave the Loggerheads the lead midway through the first period with an even strength goal assisted by Jeff Glowa and Bobby Clouston. Sayler would add an assist later in the game giving the Loggerheads resident tough guy 4 goals and 3 assists in his last 3 games.
Lakeland would hold onto that lead until late in the period when Macon's Andrew Katezberg score with just over a minute remaining to send the teams to the locker rooms tied 1-1.
The teams traded goals in the second period with Chris Cerrella scoring at 8:06 of the period and Joe Seroski scored with just 13 seconds left on the clock to tie the game up yet again 4-4 headed to the third period.
Jeff Glowa gave Lakeland the lead at 9:43 of the third period with assists going to captain Rob Schweyer and Seroski.
The Trax, however, would answer with two quick goals from Deeves and Benoit Cotnior putting Macon on top 5-4 with a little more than 6 minutes to play in regulation.
Lakeland again showed they were not going to go away as they continued to pressure Trax netminder Geoff Faulkner. Loggerheads swarmed the net after a shot from the point from Clouston and Faulkner found himself badly out of position. Seroski picked up the loose puck, circled the net and beat Macon's goaltender to even the game at 5-5 and send the game to an overtime session.
In OT, Lakeland battled shorthanded and had a few chances to win it themselves before Deeves and Cotnoir teamed up again for the game winner.
Lakeland hits the road for the next five games visiting Orlando twice (3/9 & 3/11), then Miami (3/12), Alabama (3/14) and finishing up in Jacksonville on Sunday, March 14th. The team returns home on March 18th to face off with the Miami Manatees at the Lakeland Center at 7:05pm.
The Loggerheads face off with the Alabama Slammers, Jacksonville Barracudas, Orlando Seals, Miami Manatees and the Macon Trax in the WHA2's inaugural season. All games will be broadcast on www.irn.fm.
