WHA2 announces Manatees become road warriors
March 8, 2004 - SPHL (SPHL) News Release
CELEBRATION, Fla. â The World Hockey Association 2 (WHA2) today announced that the Miami Manatees will remain in the Miami area and will play out the rest of the season's scheduled road games.
"We have been working with a local businessman to purchase the Manatees. He is committed to keeping the team in the Miami area." WHA2 Chairman of the Board David Waronker said. "It has always been our goal to have the Manatees owned locally."
The sale of the Miami Manatees to Miami businessman Al Harper is slated to close on April 15. Harper plans to keep the team in Miami for the rest of the season and compete in the 2004-2005 WHA2 season.
Those fans holding season tickets can request a refund by emailing Jenn Green at jenn@wha2.com or mailing the request to Jenn Green, WHA2, 901 Begonia Road, Celebration, Florida 34347.
Because the Manatees will only play road games, the four teams with the best winning percentage will make the playoffs. The playoff format will pit the first place team versus the fourth place team and the second place team versus the third place team in a best-of-three series. The championship round will also be a best-of-three series. The playoff format was decided based on arena availability in each of the cities.
The WHA2 has six member teams for the 2003 â 2004 season: the Alabama Slammers, Jacksonville Barracudas, Lakeland Loggerheads, Macon Trax, Miami Manatees, and Orlando Seals. Games are broadcast on www.irn.fm.
