January 4, 2020 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release

The IceDogs kicked off their first home game of 2020 against the Kitchener Rangers. Josh Rosenzweig was the starting goaltender for the 'Dogs after capturing his first OHL win on Thursday evening.

It only took 4:18 into the game for the IceDogs to find the back of the net. Ivan Lodnia pressured the Kitchener defense allowing space for Oliver Castleman to pick up the puck and slide it to Phil Tomasino in front of the net.

The IceDogs found themselves with a 5 on 3 advantage shortly after taking the lead. Adrien Beraldo buried one from the point and collected his 7th point in as many games. Tomasino picked up his 150th OHL point on the IceDogs second of the night.

Just over a minute later, Jackson Doherty hopped into the scoring and picked up his 2nd of the season after letting go a wrister in the slot. Rookie Anthony Agostinelli picked up the primary assist, and Landon Cato tallied his first OHL point on the secondary assist.

The IceDogs found themselves on a train to the penalty box which the Rangers took advantage of by scoring 3 to tie the game up going into the first intermission.

The Kitchener Rangers took the lead mid-way through the second and tacked on one more to extend their lead to 5-3. With 2:40 remaining in the second, Dakota Betts made a stretch pass to Ethan Sims at the far blueline. Sims rushed down the boards and made a sharp angled shot to the far blocker side to bring the 'Dogs within one.

The 'Dogs started off the third period killing off 4:31 minutes of a penalty. During this time players were putting their bodies in front of pucks to keep the score within reach at 5-4. Dakota Betts stood out defensively, playing not only physically but by blocking quality shots. Mid-way through the third, defenseman Dakota Betts jumped into the rush and scored the game tying goal off a pass from Lodnia.

Just over a minute later, Tomasino scored an unassisted marker to give the 'Dogs a 6-5 lead.

The Rangers didn't go quietly into the night, as they scored with 27 seconds remaining in the third to tie the game at 6 and extend the game into overtime.

Overtime was short and sweet as Ivan Lodnia scored 1:26 into 3 on 3 play off of a beautiful spotted pass from Tomasino.

The IceDogs took this one with a score of 7-6 and won their second consecutive overtime to remain undefeated in 2020.
