Local Product to Play for RailHawks

CARY, N.C. - New York Red Bulls defender Tyler Lassiter will join the Carolina RailHawks on loan for the remainder of the NASL season.

Lassiter, a Wake Forest, NC native and N.C. State and CASL alum, was chosen in the second round, 30th overall, of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. He made his professional debut on June 28 in a 2-1 U.S. Open Cup win over FC New York. A four-year starter at N.C. State, Lassiter started all 73 games of his collegiate career and scored 12 goals and eight assists. As a senior in 2010, he led the Wolfpack with six goals and six assists and was named Second Team All-ACC.

"It's a very exciting opportunity to be joining the RailHawks," said Lassiter. "I have played soccer in the Triangle for most of my life and can't wait to be able to play professional soccer in front of my friends and family. I hope to contribute to the defense and help the team bring a couple championships to the Triangle."

He played his club soccer with CASL, with whom he won a USYSA national championship in 2003 and the U.S. Club Soccer Champion's Cup in 2006. In 2009, while playing with the RailHawks U-23s, Lassiter scored the game-winning goal against England's Burnley FC at WakeMed Soccer Park. Burnley returned from its preseason U.S. tour and went on to win promotion to the English Premier League the following spring. Lassiter attended Wake Forest-Rolesville High School, where he was an all-state pick in 2005.

"Tyler is an exciting young player who we had the privilege of watching at NC State," said RailHawks Head Coach Martin Rennie. "He is someone we had hoped to sign previously, but were glad for him to get drafted by New York. It will be exciting to work with him for the remainder of the season. He will bring depth and competition for playing time as we look to have a strong finish to our season."

Lassiter has joined the RailHawks and will look to make his debut as the RailHawks face Tampa Bay at WakeMed Soccer Park at 7 p.m. The RailHawks continue to lead the NASL table, sitting seven points clear of Puerto Rico with five games remaining.
