Lively shines despite Reading getting shutout

The Fightin Phils (7-5) finish their home stand on a 4-2 note as they lose to the Akron RubberDucks (6-7) 2-0 on Wednesday night. Brock Stassi hit a pinch-hit double with one out in the top of the 9th inning to break up a no-hitter.

Ben Lively was strong in his home debut despite walking the bases in the top of the first inning but got out of trouble when Jordan Smith flew out to right field to end the inning. He struck out five batters in six innings of work. He gave up just three hits and retired 17 out of the 24 batters he faced.

RubberDucks starter Shawn Morimando (1-1) pitched six no-hit innings as he walked just three batters and recorded seven strikeouts. He left after the sixth inning for reliever Josh Martin who pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up the lone hit of the game.

Jake Lowery hit a solo home run in the top of the 7th inning off Fightin Phils reliever Ethan Stewart (0-1) to give Akron a 1-0 lead. Todd Hankins hit a RBI triple with one out to score Justin Toole and extend the lead to 2-0.

The Fightin Phils managed two get two runners on in the bottom of the ninth but failed to bring them home. Jeff Johnson (1) earned the save for Akron while Ethan Stewart took the loss.

The Fightin Phils begin a seven-game road trip on Thursday evening as they will play a four-game series against the Harrisburg Senators at Metro Bank Park. First pitch is at 6:30 pm. Fans can listen to the game beginning at 6:10 pm on fightins.com and can also view the game on MiLB.tv.
