B.C. Lions News Release
The BC Lions Football Club is pleased to announce that two players have been named to the 2010 CFL All-Star team. Ryan Phillips picked up defensive honours while on special teams kicker Paul McCallum made the squad.
The two Lions selections came by way of 53 voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) representing eight CFL markets and a national chapter as well as the eight CFL head coaches and CFL fans from across the country. Through the CFL.ca All-Star balloting program, close to a half million player selections were cast by fans across the country.
DEFENCE:
Ryan Phillips (HB) - Phillips grabs his second career CFL distinction ('07) after helping anchor the Lions' defensive backfield with 49 tackles, four sacks and a pass knockdown. The six-year CFL vet and feared ballhawk led the Lions in interceptions with five - including two apiece in Weeks 7 and 18 versus the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the second of which earned him Gibson's Finest Defensive Player of the Week honours. This past Sunday, he added one tackle and a pass knockdown versus the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Western Semi-Final.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Paul McCallum (K) - The 18-year CFL veteran and the Lions' nominee for both Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian picks up his first career CFL All-Star nod after one of his most prolific campaigns to date. The league's most accurate kicker in 2010, McCallum connected on 46 of 52 field goals (88.5%) and was second only to Calgary's Rob Maver with 177 kicking points. Handling kickoff, punting and field goal duties, the seven-year Leo also recorded 123 punts for 5,132 yards and 82 kickoffs for 4,714 yards. McCallum added to his lofty numbers during last Sunday's Western Semi-Final as he was good on all five field goal attempts, added seven punts for 295 yards as well as three kickoffs for 162 yards and was named the CFL's Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts.
