Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - Every player who's ever worn a Saltdogs uniform hopes the experience will lead to opportunities to advance their career. This offseason, three members of Lincoln's 2008 rotation are getting the chance to showcase their skills in the Veracruz Winter League in Mexico.

Right-handers Brian Campbell and Jarrett Gardner find themselves pitching for Cafeteros de Cordoba (the Cordoba Coffeegrowers) this fall. Campbell made his first appearance as a reliever, facing one batter and retiring him, before getting his first start on October 14. Brian made the most of it, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out seven in 6 1/3 innings to earn the win. Gardner had a rougher debut as a starter earlier this week, lasting just 2 2/3 innings and giving up six runs, although he ended up with a no-decision. Both pitchers had outstanding seasons for the Saltdogs in 2008. Campbell went 10-4 in his first full season as a professional, while Gardner went 11-6 and was named the Saltdogs' Pitcher of the Year. Incidentally, another former Saltdog is playing for Cordoba this offseason: Jose Torres, who spent part of the 2006 season in Lincoln.

Left-hander Vince Davis is also pitching in the VWL, for Rojos de Veracruz (the Veracruz Reds). Davis found success in his first start, tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings and allowing just two hits to pick up the win. The big lefty thrived down the stretch for the Saltdogs in 2008, finishing with a 6-4 record and a 3.47 ERA. Davis was especially good over his final three starts, allowing just one earned run in 21 2/3 innings of work.
