New Jersey Jackals News Release
The Lincoln Saltdogs' John Alonso ended tonight's marathon affair with a walk-off single, giving Lincoln the 14-13 victory.
In arguably the most wild game in Jackals history, Jon Kibler retired the first two batters he faced, but the Saltdogs sent nine to the plate in both the first and second innings to take an eight-run lead. Both teams traded third inning runs.
The Jackals scored seven in the fourth, capped off by Angel Berroa's Can-Am leading fourth home run of the year. New Jersey completed the comeback the following inning via Steve Caseres' single and Jeff Lanning's sacrifice fly to go up 10-9.
Coming in relief of starter Jon Kibler, Keith Cantwell threw a scoreless fourth, but the Saltdogs tied it up in the fifth when C Alan Rick looped a double less than a foot fair in no-man's land down the left field line. He scored on a Mike Provencher ground out.
The Saltdogs regained the lead in the sixth. Third-baseman Leivi Ventura's second home run of the night put the Saltdogs up 11-10.
Danny Santiesteban started the seventh inning with a ground-rule double to left field. He came in on Jeff Lanning's ground out to tie the score at 11.
To relieve a taxed bullpen, the Jackals called on starter Isaac Pavlik to pitch the seventh in relief of Cantwell. Making his first relief appearance since 2010, Pavlik allowed a lead-off single to SS Joe Spiers. After stealing both second and third base, he scored on a RF Stephen Holdren ground out to give the Saltdogs the 12-11 lead.
With two outs in the top of the eighth, Nick Giarraputo homered in Angel Berroa to put the Jackals back on top 13-12.
In the ninth, closer Mike Zenko retired the first two batters and was ahead 0-2 on Stephen Holdren, but managed a 1-2 single to right. His pinch-runner Brad Payne stole second, inducing the Jackals to intentionally walk Leivi Ventura. Saltdogs manager Chris Miyake elected to send both runners, and successfully put the winning run at second base without a throw from Jackals catcher Jeff Lanning.
The next batter 1B John Alonso, who did not play yesterday because of back spasms, lined a bullet past Nick Giarraputo, ending a three-hour, 18-minute marathon while giving the Lincoln Saltdogs the 14-13 edge.
Mike Zenko (0-1, 3.86) takes the loss, while Pete Parise (2-0, 0.00) picks up the win in relief.
Tomorrow the Jackals send out Kyle Greenwalt (1-0, 1.69 ERA). The Saltdogs will turn to former Tampa Bay Devil Rays farmhand Jino Gonzalez (0-2, 7.56 ERA). Sunday's first pitch is set for 6:05 ET.
