Bicondoa Retires First 19, But Boulders Get Last Laugh
May 26, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Ryan Bicondoa retired the first 19 batters he faced, but four of the next five reached with hits, and the Rockland Boulders scored three runs in that span. A three-run eighth gave them the advantage in another 6-4 win over the Worcester Tornadoes on Saturday at Provident Bank Park.
The Tornadoes scored single runs in the second and third innings via a Johnny Welch double (plating Alex Trezza) and a Jerod Edmondson sacrifice fly to score Cam Monger. The Worcester club added two more runs in the fifth, as Jose Canseco had an RBI double to the deepest part of the ballpark-- after Edmondson did the same-- and Nick Salotti singled the former major leaguer home.
Bicondoa recorded exactly one groundout each inning through the first five innings, also getting help from Brendon Kelliher, who had one putout in each of those frames.
The defensive highlight of the night was courtesy of Johnny Welch, who dove over the railing protecting the Tornadoes dugout to make an inning-ending catch in the fifth.
The Tornadoes pitching coach and starting pitcher Bicondoa had a 1-2-3 sixth inning and struck Qualon Millender out looking to start the seventh. Cole Kraft-- who had two 2-out RBI hits Friday-- hit a slow roller that crept through the infield to ruin the perfect game bid.
The next two Boulders reached with singles, including the RBI-infield-single for Ryan Scoma, placing one right off of Bicondoa's glove after he had retired three previous batters 1-3 in his outing. Norm Hutchins' 2-run double two batters later chased the starter from the game.
Phil Negus struck out the only batter he faced in the seventh, Scott Clement, but allowed a lead-off homer to Todd Gossage (his second solo homer in as many days) to tie the game. After allowing a couple more baserunners, Negus was pulled. He finished the day with one inning pitched, one hit allowed and three runs, all earned. Matt McDonald gave up two hits in one-third of an inning, allowing both baserunners he inherited to score.
The final game of the three-game set is Sunday at 2:00pm, as Dan Sausville will try to help the Tornadoes avoid a sweep. Coverage starts at 1:50 with Tornadoes Pre-Game Live on USTREAM.tv.
