St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (June 15, 2010) - The St. Paul Saints were hoping for a repeat of Monday night's heroics as Ole Sheldon stepped to the plate as the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, but lightning wouldn't strike twice as they lost 2-1 on Tuesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 5,054.

In the ninth inning with the Saints trailing by a run Josh Alley drew a two out walk. That allowed Sheldon to step to the plate. Alley took some pressure off of Alley by stealing second, meaning a base hit would tie the game, but Sheldon popped out to first ending the game.

Both starters looked strong for the second consecutive evening. For the Saints Ryan Morse was on his game. He gave up one run in the second inning when Ray Serrano led off with a walk, went to third on a single by T.J. Bohn and scored on a double play ground out from Jared Keel.

In the top of the third Michael Roberts led off with a single, went to second on Dustin Jones' single and then the two runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Paul Bridenbaugh. Jon Owings ground out to second scored the run. Morse went 7.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out five.

The Saints offense, however, couldn't muster much against Mikael Ryder. In the bottom of the fourth the newest member of the Saints Flint Wipke hit a pop up on the infield that three infielders called for, but nobody caught and it went for a double. Two batters later Gerard Haran singled him home. With two outs Steve Mays singled Haran to second, but Brandon Carter popped out to end the inning. The Saints had two more chances with runners at first and second and one out, but couldn't push anything across.

The Saints collected over 3,000 rolls of toilet paper which will be delivered to Second Harvest Heartland by Innovative Office Solutions on Nurse's Night presented by Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The final game of the three game series is Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Jason Godin (1-0, 5.66) to the mound against Explorers LHP David Welch (1-0, 2.25). It's a day of Surviving and Thriving. The game can be seen live on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in our area) and heard at 6:00 p.m. on Relevant Radio 1330.
