West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps, in conjunction with the Detroit Tigers, announced today that LHP Ed Clelland and catcher Jeff Kunkel are transferred to Lakeland's roster while LHP Charles Furbush joins the Whitecaps from the Gulf Coast League Tigers.

Furbush is the first 2007 draft pick to be on a Whitecaps roster this season. The Baton Rouge, La., resident was a fourth round draft pick by the Tigers and signed on June 21. Furbush appeared in four games this season with the GCL Tigers, posting a 2-0 record with 2.81 ERA that includes three starts. The 21-year-old southpaw pitched for LSU for two years after transferring from Saint Joseph's College in Maine.

Clelland was nearly unhittable the past month out of the Whitecaps bullpen. He was 2-0 with a 0.79 ERA and six saves in 24 appearances for West Michigan, including a current streak of 17.0 consecutive scoreless innings. Opposing batters were hitting just .134 off Clelland as he struck out 23 and walked six batters.

Kunkel has been on the disabled list since June 11 and will be activated and transferred to Lakeland's roster. The former Michigan Wolverine hit .230 (23-for-100) with four RBIs and six runs scored in 29 games with the Whitecaps.

Whitecaps RHP Dan Fyvie was also removed from the suspended list after serving his five-game suspension last week and will be available for Tuesday's game against Kane County at 7 p.m.

The Whitecaps active roster is now at the maximum 25 players with three players on the disabled list.
