Three Chiefs Earn Promotions to Daytona

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced the promotions of outfielders Matt Camp and Alfred Joseph along with infielder Jonathon Mota to the clubs High-A affiliate in Daytona. Peoria will welcome back Jose Ceda was well as three members of the 2007 Cubs draft class.

Shortstop Darwin Barney will be the highest member of the 2007 draft class to join the Chiefs this season. Barney, a native of Beaverton, Oregon was selected by the Cubs in the fourth round from Oregon State University. Barney was a member of the Oregon State teams that won consecutive National Championships in 2006 & 2007. Prior to the '07 campaign, he was selected as the pre-season Pac-10 Player of the Year and was ranked as the fourth best draft prospect in the Pac-10. After the draft Barney was sent to the Mesa to start his professional career in the Arizona Rookie League. In four games with the AZL Cubs he went 8-for-16 with three doubles and two RBI. He also did not make an error while playing shortstop.

Outfielder Leon Johnson was selected in the 10th round of this years draft out of BYU. He also attended Eastern Arizona College from before coming to BYU. He had been selected three different times in the draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays between 2003-2006. While a member of the Cougars the Thatcher Arizona native set a conference record for stolen bases as a Sophomore with 29. After the draft the Cubs sent Johnston to the Arizona Rookie League in Mesa. While with Mesa he hit .433 (29-for-67) in 18 games including nine multiple hit games. He is 13-for-14 in stolen bases attempts.

The Provo, UT native returned to the Cougars lineup in 2007 after missing two seasons to go on his Mormon mission.

Outfielder Clark Hardman was taken by the Cubs in the 9th round of June's draft out of Cal State Fullerton. Hardman was a member for the 2007 Titan team that fell to UC Irvine in the longest game in College World Series history. Hardman made one of the more well known catches in the series in centerfield in the fifth of the game to keep the game tied. He has been in Mesa, Arizona playing in the Arizona Rookie league since July 9. In three games with the AZL Cubs he is hitting .300 (3-for-10).

Reliever Jose Ceda returns to Peoria after beginning the season as a starter and landing on the DL in May. Ceda, who was on the disabled list started his road back to Peoria with a stint in Mesa. In two appearances in the AZL Ceda posted a 0-0 record with a 2.45 ERA. He pitched 3 2/3 innings while allowing one run on two hits. Prior to heading to the DL on May 11th, Ceda was 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA in six starts with the Chiefs.

Camp heads to Daytona where he is expected to play a mixture of outfield and second base with the Cubs. Camp led the Chiefs in games played with 91 while hitting .249 with two home runs and 35 RBI. He is also ranked second in the MWL with 31 stolen bases. Camp also led the Chiefs in runs scored (52), at bats (333) and was second on the team with 83 hits.

Joseph, who spent time playing both corner outfield positions as well as being a designated hitter. He was hitting .246 with two home runs and 24 RBI in 77 games played in 2007. Alfred is also second on the team with 11 stolen bases.

Mota spent time playing shortstop, third base and second base before being called up to Daytona. In 67 games this season he is hitting .277 with two home runs and 24 RBI. Mota had an 11 game hitting streak that stretched from June 26-July 7th. He went 14-for-52 (.275) during the streak.
