Lexington Legends News Release
APPLEBEE'S PARK (Lexington, KY)- Lexington kept pace early but were outlasted by West Virginia's superior pitching in a 4-2 Saturday night loss. Both squads were homerun happy early, but West Virginia starter Chris Cody (2-0) was able to outlast Lexington's Robert Leonhardt (2-4) for the two-run win.
West Virginia catcher Jonathan Lucroy sent a two-run homer over the left field bleachers for the quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Lexington starter Leonhardt would give up two homeruns while walking three in an eventual loss.
Speedster Craig Corrado put his mark on the scoreboard, first pounding out a single then advancing to second with a little help from a Matt Cusick sacrifice bunt. Corrado stole third and scored on Lucroy's throwing error to third to make it 2-1.
Leonhardt surrendered a second homerun to Matt Cline in the top of the third, Cline's second hit of the year with West Virginia. Jonathan Fixler hit his second home run in as many days in the home half to bring the Legends closer at 3-2.
With bases loaded in the top of the fifth, the Legends turned a 6-4-3 double play off of a Zelous Wheeler infield dribbler to keep the slim deficit. Bryan Brown then led off the bottom half with a double, but the opportunity for a score slipped when he was forced out on a double play.
Steffan Wilson smacked an RBI double but got caught trying to stretch it into a triple. With Leonhardt's fourth earned run and eighth base hit, Lexington brought in reliever Mike Koons. Koons would lead the Legends through two and two-thirds innings.
On the other side, Power starter Chris Cody made his third appearance for the Power in 2008 count. The Legends would have had a better chance against a middle-reliever, but Cody stretched his second start of the season to eight full innings. Cody finished with two runs (one earned), no walks and seven strikeouts.
The seventh and eighth innings would prove scoreless, despite just a two-run Power lead. Fernando Abad came on in the ninth and got two quick outs to start the last frame. He next gave up a hit and moved the runner to second with an errant pickoff throw. Abad would get out of the jam after a fly-out to center for the third out.
West Virginia reliever Rob Bryson took the stage in the bottom of the ninth and walked leadoff man Cat Everett. Everett would watch from the baseline as Bryson got three straight outs from the top of the Lexington lineup and earned his third save of the year.
Be sure to check out the Legends as they take on West Virginia in the second of their two-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
